Title: Did I really record 24 bit (soundforge question)
Post by: Fatah Ruark (aka MIKE B) on December 10, 2004, 12:26:33 AM: Soon after I got my UA5 I recorded a show @ 24/96. Or at least I think I did. I'm not certain I fed my laptop a 24/96 signal. I know I did select 24/96 in SoundForge. But that doesn't really mean I actually made a 24/96 show. I may NOT have put the UA5 in advanced (thus enabling 24bit output). Correct me if I'm wrong anywhere. Oh, and I fed the laptop the signal via USB.

Is there a way I can check my file in SoundForge that I really got a 24/96 signal from the UA5, as opposed to recording a 16/96 signal from the UA5 (with the ADV switch off). When I check the properties of the file it says 24/96 but if I recorded it that way I guess it would think it really is because I told it to record 24/96.

Post by: Tall Adam on December 10, 2004, 11:39:54 AM: im pretty sure...if the adv switch was off, you did record 16/96 but the computer recorded it as 24/96. essentially, it will sound like 16/96 but be written as 24 just with 8 bits of extra blank data. i used to record "24/96" from my m-100fx but i think in acutality it was 24/44.1 because the m-100fx only outputs at 44.1 (regardless of bitrate). thus the files were in 24/96 format...but a bunch of the samples it captured were just blank data.

i could be way off here...anyone?

Just thought I would complicate matters a bit more... ::)

didnt even think of that, good point. well if you got audio, and it was on the 96 rec mode on the front for sure then the mystery thickens...im guessing you did get 24/96

no cuz it will still record data at 24/96 if its set to that, even if it is only recording a lower bit rate/sample rate. blank data takes up just as much space as relevant data. it just fills up with lots of zeros
