Out of nowhere the firewire on my jb3 has stopped working. I have tried everything: reinstalled drivers, reinstalled notmad, downgraded then re-upgraded to the latest firmware and my computers are still not recognizing it! I have tried on three different computers with different cables; and I had successfully done multiple firewire transfers on these computers before!
My only thought is hotswapping may have fried it?
The usb still works so it's not completely shot or anything, but still frustrating nonetheless...

what exactly is hot-swapping?
i always leave my firewire cable plugged into the comp, and when needed i just connect the jb3 to the firewire cable, is that hot-swapping?

all I know is that the fw 410 manual STRONGLY warns against hotswapping; they recommend that you connect the 410 to the computer when both units are turned off (which leads me to believe that hotswapping is plugging them together while one or both are turned on). The warning goes for disconnecting as well I believe.
However, this might be because the computer can supply bus power to the 410 via six pin firewire cable. and we all know there is no bus power with the jb3. Can any smart people elaborate on this?

Well having several friends who have had exteranl HDD die on them this vary way I would strongly suggest that you shut down before disconnecting and connect prior to boot up. Lacie specifically told my friend that if you have to force a re-start on a PC it could potentially corrupt the data on the HDD and thats exactly what it did. Because the JB3 has a HDD in it I wouldn't take the chance. Not to mention it only takes a few extra seconds to shut down and reboot when u want to connect stuff. Peace of mind to me is better than saving a few minutes

the jb3 is recording perfectly fine still and the usb has been transferring reliably with only one botched transfer. I guess it doesn't matter, but I want the firewire back.... :(

with XP you should be able to do "remove devices" (not sure how its worded on all computers) which should stop an external or internal plug and play device (HDDs, soundcards, etc.) and make it safe to remove without restarting. i know ive accidentally unplugged my hard drive without stopping it a few times, but im trying to get better disicplined and being more careful to stop it first.
are we talkin windows or mac here?

chris,
if you want to try connecting up one of my jb3's just to be sure that the problem lies with yours, or try hooking yours up to my laptop, i'd be happy to help out with that.
i hot-swap mine on the 4-pin firewire all the time and have not had any problems. just did it right now as a matter of fact. i'm around through the holidays if you want to get together.

that's a good idea. you got any good shows lined up for next week?
