I am looking for a low cost a/d and i think this fits the bill.
But what I wonder is can i run it vertically (i'm worried
about the optical cable) with the back of the unit facing
the ground? I have a camera bag which i run my V2
vertically as well. It'd be nice if i could just set this all
up in the bag so that when i go to put my mics up
all i have to do is plugin in xlrs, power up and ready to go.
any advice?

[1] Get a right-angle optical cable.
or
[2] Build a support cage for it - lots pics in the Rig Pics section

ahh this makes sense. i guess that's what my question should hvae been:
do they make right angle optical cables? duh!
Thanks Brian!

Ahem! (Surely, you knew this was coming:) Check the Archival Info forum for a thread on optical cable options.

oh, i was only making fun of my own stupidity (not asking if they actually made them)
I assumed since you said they did, that they did... ;D

I run my UA-5 in a sonicase. I took two small pieces of wood and basically made stilts, so it sits high enough so all the cables fit fine ( I don't even need to use right angle cables) under it, it is high enough in the bag so all the knobs and buttons are level with the dividers of the bag, and so that it is as wide as the sonicase, so nothing falls down between it and the bag. They are held in place with 4 strips of gaffer's tape so it was cheaper and easier to do than building a cage from wire shelving.
I've had the bag over a year, and the only time I had to replace the tape was when I sent the UA-5 back to Oade for a mod, so I know it is sturdy.

is there such thing as a right angle USB cable with the right angle on the UA5 end?
EDIT:
yes, yes there is:

it seems to me that i remember reading a thread within the past few months
sayin there was a usb right angle cable available.
-
I'd go the route of support cage... you are still putting the weight of the unit on a right angle plug...
-
I used to use the Target shelving for a cage, but I ditched that in favor of a cage made from a 3 ring binder and velcro. The part that used to hold the three rings sits on the bottom, and the ua5 is velcroed to each side of the "U" that it forms. I have it so it rides high in the "U", so I don't even really need right angle cables ( but I do use em).
-
I never did get to see that yet. Let's see some pics.

Here ya go beatch ;). It aint pretty, but it works better for me than the Target shevles did(takes up less space in the bag). The Walmart batt is velcroed on the side of the binder as well... All the cables stay hooked up, so just connect to JB3, laptop, or D8 and the batt, done.
