Title: I think Im doomed to never have decent playback
Post by: Swampy on December 18, 2004, 12:26:22 PM
So I get my Behringer 2031Ps yesterday, hooked them up to my Yamaha amp today, and notice one of the channels on my amp is busted. The one channel is a little distorted :( I switched the speakers, so I know that its the amp thats busted... Im so frutrated. Im just going to return the monitors and go buy a decent stereo from Best Buy... I always have trouble with playback. Ive had computer speakers that I blew out, stand alones that the recever broke then back to computer speakers, now to monitors... Sorry I guess I just needed to vent!

i feel your pain.  i got a bunch of mid-fi stuff given to me, not the best, but better than what i have at the moment, the things that i really needed to work, didn't work...making the rest of it useless.  i sold it all and bought a v3 - a good decision if you ask me.  for my playback i have a pretty decent onkyo 6.1 surround sound setup.  its not awesome, but for your normal consumer grade setups, i think it fuggin rocks.

i watched lord of the rings - return of the king last night in dts es 6.1 and holy crap did it sound awesome.

Im just gonna find a decent stereo at Best Buy and be done with it. I have so much music, music is like the biggest thing in my life, and I dont even have speakers to listen to it with!

www.salescircular.com <-- that site might be helpful, shows you whats cheap in your area.

www.pricegrabber.com and www.epinions.com are great sites too for getting reviews on consumer stuff.

Just wait until you are a little older and are making decent money. You'll be able to put together a great system. I had shit for playback when I was your age. Most people did. It's hard to own expensive things when you are young and don't have much money. Shit, I wasn't able to afford high dollar taping equipment until I was well into my twenties.

Well, if you bought the 2031p version, the "P" stands for powered. They are an active speaker with a built-in amplifier. You should not be running anything more than a line level signal to them from a DAT or CD player.

can i suggest that rather than putting money into a cheap stereo you are going to discard in a few years you consider getting a nice set of cans and a headphone amp.  that being said i have a cheap ass stereo in my bathroom to wake me up for those 5 am work days (which lately seems to be every day)

Something to think about....

sorry, gotta disagree with that suggestion as your primary playback option.  I enjoy listening on phones from time to time, but I like the experience of the soundstage opening up in front of me and the visceral effect of music can only be felt in open playback, imo.  I'm sure Alex would benefit from jonny's john setup, but I'm not sure what it has to do with anything.  I think getting yourself something with decent power from best buy or circuitcity is a good idea.  look around for open box deals for things with blemishes and full warranties.  don't spend a ton, but you'll get something very listenable for a decent price.

I still will have money to throw around at phones too... What could you really get for like 150 or 200 as far as heaphones and an amp go? Thanks for all the suggestions guys!

you can get a set of Sennheiser HD-580's off ebay brand new for around $125.  I have these and love them.  great full sound and non-fatiguing.  also very comfortable to listen on.  highly recommended.

I am a huge fan of the Grado series...while the open design takes some getting used to, once you do they are the most comfortable and natural sounding headphones I have ever used...I use the SR80s right now...
