Title: Mic and Pre for JB3 ($500 budget)
Post by: cyfan on December 28, 2004, 09:53:31 AM
I've been pissing around with this problem for a few months now.
Need to buy some mics and a preamp for the JB3 but only have about $500 to spend.
Initially wanted to save up some more to get a UA-5 or AD-20 and mics, but I'll need a working kit by mid February.
Basically need decent inexpensive mics: workable for both loud bands and quiet acoustic shows, stealth not a requirement, and I prefer brighter sound over "warm" recordings.
Preamp: that works with mics and won't introduce too much noise.
I suppose it would be best to have a preamp with phantom power for the mics.

Any advice? Anybody got a used UA-5/mic set they wanna sell for $500?

Tim

Thanks guys. I just snagged those Superlux's from the Yard Sale. Thanks for the heads up.
Now I'll be on the lookout for the used UA-5. I've seen them listed as warm mod and digi-mod. Is there a difference?

Tim
Hell I might even have money leftover for new XLR cables at this rate.

Digi mod allows use without a computer and the warm mod colors the sound.  There was a diy digimod for sale for $230 plus shipping on the yard sale.  The only problem is that Oade will only mod units purchased from them so you would have to do any additional mods yourself.

Looks like someone answered your question, but you may still want to check out the Archival Info forum's UA-5 FAQ (http://www.taperssection.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=14389.0).

Don't really understand why more people don't recommend the PS-2 > AD-20 combo, about the same price as the UA-5, no modding, or clusmy battery packs to make, easy, small, stealthable, and about the same quality. I was thinking long and hard about the UA-5 vs. AD-20, and it looks like I am gonna go PS-2 > AD-20 simply because of the stealthing fact. And then if I want to get Lux's or Oktava's, I always can with the PS-2 > AD-20, doesn't everyone agree?

I really like the one-box aspect of the ua-5.  I don't stealth at the moment either.  I also like the mod options from Oade.  The deciding factor for most folks seems to be the sound of the ad-20.  It's another issue of personal preference I suppose.

UA-5 is smaller than those 2 boxes, less cables, also does d>a, newer technology, can do live matrix, computer interface can be handy.  As far as batteries go, my AD-20 sucks a 9v dry in a few hours and that's no good for the earth!

Smaller than the PS-2 > AD-20? I thought both of those still were alot smaller than the UA-5, thus making them stealth and the UA-5 not. How long does your battery pack last for the UA-5? Thanks.

the walmart ones that many of us use for ua-5's  are around 7 hours run time with phantom on. ive never even come close to maxing one out.
