Title: Windscreens..Will they take quality away from an indoor recording?
Post by: thierryhenry on December 28, 2004, 02:23:19 PM
I know this really shouldn't matter and it is probably dumb; I have two sizes of windscreens for my SP-CMC-8's, the medium (regular sized ones) and the large ones. Now if I ever went to a festival or anything outdoor, I'd use the large ones. But most of my taping is indoors. Now, does having even the medium windscreens on in an indoor taping situation, will that affect my tape at all? Thanks, always wondered abotu this.

Shouldn't have any negative effect at all. Smaller screens are great indoors for fans, smoke, etc. I always run screens regardless.

I think that the only ones that I have ever heard people say that they have heard a audable difference are the big freaking Shures... No reason whatsoever to run thoes inside!

i rarely run screens indoors.  only when there is a ceiling fan present.  i've never noticed a difference really indoors using them, and when outside they are always on.  i just don't use them inside cause i had small screens but my dog tore them up.  and the big shures are overkill for indoors.  i will probably continue to not use screens cause i've had good luck so far

if not for anything else, screens protect the mic capsules from smoke to a degree

Gotta echo what Nick said, protection from smoke (even if it's minor) is a big benefit.  Plus, if your stand happens to get knocked over by a spun out w00k, the screens will add some cushion so the mics don't hit the ground dead on. ;)

that's the only reason I use them inside.  the orange peel is non smoking so I never use them there.

I actually have 3 pairs of screens - the almost worthless stock Neumann screens for indoors to protect from smoke, some DPAs I use for celining fans/vents or normal outdoor use, and some big Shures for extra windy shows.

Pretty much ready for anything...

Think I'll use the large windscreens tomorrow @ Root, since it is suppose to rain/windy.

i always use screens. i have a nice small pair for indoors to protect from smoke. all the venues here allow smoking so it is usually pretty bad

i personally think you should always run screens, even if small ones to protect your diaphrams from all the smoke and shit in the air. i use mine religiously, and always have

good screens shouldn't have an audible effect on the sound...
