Title: PCM-R300 arrived today! wahoo!
Post by: edgar on January 05, 2005, 05:07:59 AM
hey all-

so stoked to see this arrive today, yet sadly won't have time to play with it until tomorrow.
seems to be quite the deal i snagged on ebay ...obviously the seller wasn't thinking about their auction ending on xmas daywhen they listed it  :-)

$179 shipped and it was a demo/floor model from a pro audio shop in the midwest...im quite pleased with the deal.

anyways...

when i -do- get the chance to plug this in...is there anything in particular, other than the obvious functions i should test/check?

anything that is known to be problematic with these units?

it appears to be super clean, and the seller stated it was a demo model that sat on the showroom floor, but i obviously still want to run some tests...

any feedback? suggestions?

can't wait to fire this sucker up!

the r300 has issues with 90m tapes. you'll probably see "THIN TAPE" in your display.

R300 is fine with 90m tapes, yes you will see "thin tape" in the display, but it won't hurt anything. More correctly, it just has transport issues. Chances are you'll be like the rest of us who own these units and end up sending them to Paul at Pro Digital to get the transport worked on within a year or so.

agreed...I had mine for probably 18 months before the transport quit working...good news is Paul can fix it, and since he has I have had zero problems with the deck...and I run 80% 90M tapes

My R-300 worked for less than a year.  Sent it to Paul at Pro Digi and it was "fixed" for about a month, then stopped working completely.  It's still in my closet with my un-working Fostex D-5.  Hope yours works out better!

Paul does warranty his work. If it was related to the transport, he would have fixed that under warranty. He has one of the best reputations in the business (*and I don't mean just the taper community, I'm talking pro sound guys who depend on their equipment to make a living*).

thanks for all of your feedback +T all around....

sadly, 95%+ of my masters are on 90's so we'll see what goes on with it...

*knocks wood* hoping for the best

you should be fine for a while and when it breaks, Paul can fix it and you will have a solid deck on your hands...

My R300 also got "the fix" from Paul at Pro Digital, and under warranty - I believe he replaces the stock transport with a beefier one from an earlier model? No problems since, been as solid as my R500.

so i checked the lil function/display that allows you to see how many hrs have been put on the unit, and it says 147.

should i send it in now and have him make the mods before i get it situated and comfy in my rack , only for it to eat a tape or something and have to send it later?

probably best to do as others have suggested: send it to Plotnick. tust me, it's better to drop the $$ now than have it eat a master you made, and then have to send it in then or dump it.  ;)

it WIll break... that's just all there is to it. Once Paul fixes it though it is a real workhorse. They ALL have transport problems though...

ok, so i took everyones advice and sent it in to prodigital , even though it wasnt broken yet...

however i feel i'll be better in the long run, NOT eating masters, and having to take it down/out of rack, send it later, etc...

just sucks...the shipping on getting it, then sending it to paul, and back to me, is gonna be close to $100 alone :-(

i know. thats why im doing it. id rather have it work kickass for years than have it crap out after a month or two.

thanks again to all who advised. i wish it wasnt going to be so costly, but i guess this is a good case of you pay for what you get :-)
