So I wanted to start taping.
I have now a D8 and a JB3 for taping (will be using the JB3), I ordered some AT831s mics (SPCMC2s), but now I have no idea what to put between the recorder and the mics. Do I have to use anything to power the mics? Anything that can do ADC?
I have really no clue on this. Any help appreciated
NOTE: Stealth taping, low budget (don't suggest 3000$ battery boxes!)
Thanks!

At minimum, you are going to need a batterybox. That's the minimum you'll need to get going.
-
sound pros battery boxes are reasonable. Just make sure you get one that uses standard 9v batteries, and not these little tiny weird batteries.

Can suggest something to shoot for...
Phantom power the 853's and get an MP-2... Not exactly starter, but you will be very happy with the results...
-
i'd think they'd be much happier going to better mics and a full rig sytem if they're going to get phantom power mods and an mp2..just me though.
as for the question, check out soundprofessionals.com. look for the SP-SPSB-1 or SP-SPSB-6 (i think those are the right numbers). the difference is basically a cute little plastic case :)

You'll need some kind of preamp to get your recording up to line level. If not, you may hear small beeps in your recording. Denecke AD20 will do the trick.

Thanks for suggestions
Finally I'm going something like this
AT853 phantom > PS2 > JB3.
Is this enough? ( No money to get a AD20 :( )
-
you can get a PS-2 AND an AD20 for 300 buck in the yard sale area. I run 853>ps2>ad20>jb3 and have really liked the results (Thanks TS.COM!). I'll attach a short sample of my latest recording so you can decide from yourself. This was FOB 5th row centre in a club of about 200 people...

great sample, voice sounds great, but I don't have money t oget an AD20.
I think I will get some transformers (they should give a little preamp), that should be really cheap and enough, right?

I have the SP cmc4 (At853) mics with a soundprofessionals batterybox and a D8 and I am really happy with my tapes. I also have a JB3 and have a AD20 with that one. The AD20->JB3 is a bit better but the difference isn´t mileswide.

I should clarify that my AD20 is a modded version with built in 9V for the mics. The standard AD20 doesn´t have this option so you would have to power the mics somehow.
My suggestion is that you get a batterybox for the mics and start with the D8. If you like the mics you can always think of something for the JB3 later. AT831 -> Batterybox -> D8 is a rig you can get through security pretty easy. Ad20-> JB3 is a bit bigger and could be difficult to get in if there is a search at the door and you are alone.
OR
Sell the D8 and get some money for something like a AD20 for the JB3.
If you have set your mind on using the JB3 you don´t need the D8 anyway.

I'm going thru this now as well. My mics from SoundProfessisonal are ISI-SGNM-1 mini-cardioids mounted in a gooseneck.
What I found was that the battery box SP-SPSB-1 gives levels which are too small for JB3 even when cranked up to +12dB.
So I'm going to try a pair of these:
http://www.rdlnet.com/stm-2.htm
and see how they sound unless I get overwhelming comments here that they won't work well. I've seen them on ebay from time to time for like $10.
I had already started a thread on this pre-amp to see what experienced people think about them, don't mean to be redundant here in this thread.
