Title: How's this for a noob rig?
Post by: Diamond_D on January 13, 2005, 12:59:12 AM
So I've been doing a ton of reading on here and some other sites lately, and emailing members, everyone has been most helpful, sending me samples and such, great forum!

I plan to do some recording of bands that are cool with taping, but in venues that don't usually know the artists' policies and can be pains in the ass, plus I don't want a big setup to deal with anyway. For my starting rig I'm thinking of:

SP CMC-2's (AT831) --> SPSB-7 (w/rolloff and level control) --> NJB3

Assuming these will be loouud concerts, will the level from the batt box be high enough for the line-in on the JB3? It seems like there are plenty of people using this basic setup so it seems to be OK.

Also, I do a fair bit of video shooting, with the level control on the batt box, will I be able to take the level down to a suitable mic-in level for the camcorder (Sony miniDV)?

Once I get some experience, I'll probably spring for an AD-20 (for size and price reasons) if I feel I need a pre and external A/D.

I appreciate any advice and comments you guys have, thanks!

sounds like a good starter rig to me.  Have fun and let us know how it turns out! +T and welcome aboard.

Bet %50 of newbies start with that or some very close variation...myself included.  Have fun +T.

If you get an AD-20, make sure you get the one with an 1/8" (3.5mm) input.

Don't all of them come with this? Thanks.

the regular ones come with XLR inputs only. The more expensive version also has the 1/8 input and an extra battery spot.

Yeah, the modded version from SP, that's like $359, freaking rip off.
