So I've probably read just about every single post on this board about stealthing, but I have yet one more question. I bought SP-CMC-2 (lucky for me that I bought them a few days ago and now they are unavailable!). The battery box I bought is SP-SPSB-6 and I'll be using a JB3 for storage.
So say I'm standing front row of a GA show.

Am I correct to say I'd have to be pointing my mics towards the large speakers at both sides? What would be the best way to mount the mics so they stay facing the direction I put them in? I'll probably think of something else I wanted to ask later on.

embarassed to ask,.... I'm not so familiar with that mic line. are these small omnis, or cardioids?
They're cardioids. But I'd really like to be front row. If I were standing any farther back, I would not see a thing since I'm only 5'3.

Gots to agree with Moke, for best results you 'll want to be back a bit.

Some of our members runs cardioids as a head mounted pair, around the back of his head, like this \O/ (but a wider off axis angle). You could make a headband, and hide them in your hair fairly easily.
You and I have opposite issues on the height issue ;D
As far as pointing them at the stacks at that closeness,.. is that you might be too close. So I'd try to get what I could from the stage gear output, and hope for something from the pa. The problem with being that close is that lot of bands run in-ear monitors anymore, so vocals will be lacking, perhaps.

Well *IF* I do go to these four shows, I'll just try taping the first one. If it sounds terrible, I'll wait till they play shows in North America. I'm planning on travelling to Europe for this so if the quality won't be good, I'll just have fun instead! ;D ;D ;D

you can tape from the front row, but your going to make a monitor tape...which isnt necessarily a bad thing...I have a couple of Pearl Jam shows from 4-5th row that sound great...monitors though can be uneven...also from the front row...I would guess it will not be easy to be discrete :P

They put on an awesome concert.

as everyone has said you won't get great results at all from the front row. if the band runs in ear moniters and no stage wedges your tape will be even worse.
you basically have 3 options:
1) Try to pull the best tape by locating yourself further back in the room to form a triangle between the speaker stacks and yourself. As a result you won't enjoy the show, visually, because of your height.
2) Pull a sub-par recording, but still enjoy the show from the front row.(is this going tobe worth it?)
3) DOn't record at all and have an absolute blast at the show.
make the best choice for you. if they are playing 4 shows in a row at the same place and you plan on attending all, just tape one and sacrifice some enjoyment for one night. If you pull a great tape you'll thank yourself later when playing back for being a trooper because you have a great concert to listen too.

Ya I think I might stick to #3. I have a couple months to think about it anyways. But the only thing with picking which show to tape, is that they're set is always different, and I know I'll beat myself up if I miss taping a song or two that I've never heard live.

Well that one venue does have a balconey. If they use it for this show, I'll probably just grab a couple of those tickets instead and only tape this one show.

Another option that has not been mentioned yet, would be to make a stack tape by standing in line with one of the P.A. stacks, relatively close to the stage. That should give you less room reverb and possibly less crowd noise. I prefer the more up-front sound of stack tapes, and that's how I record 99% of the time when I'm stealthing, but tastes vary, of course...

SP-BMC-xx are omnis. ("B" for binaural)
SP-CMC-xx are cardioids. ("C" for cardioid)

If you haven't, you may hear a small beeping noise in your recording. The beep will be about every 10 seconds or so. That'is from the hard drive spinning in the JB3. You'll need a Denecke AD-20 mic preamplifier between the battery box and the JB3. The preamp will raise the recording to line-level, which will eliminate the beep.
Just friendly advice based on experience. Welcome to TS! T+

No I haven't taped yet. But I've listened to a bunch of recordings with the same setup, and there weren't any beeps. I should get the mics next week so I'll test them out at home.
