hey,
so i think i might like to try some omni recordings with like a 35ft spread. this means i'll have to get let 100 ft cables right? do i just point the mic's at the stacks? how high should i go if i'm taping with omnis? if anyone knows any little tips and tricks please let me know. thanks a million!

To go 35 feet, you'd need to go out from center 17.5ft and then up 9 or so. You'd need 2 30ft cables so you will have a bit of slack.
I've done this big a spread, but only outdoors (where would you do it indoors anyway) and WAY back from the stacks. If you are at a festival, or on the lawn at your local shed go for it, otherwise a smaller spread is all you need.
You may not notice a change if you angle the omni's, but I'd point them straight ahead to start. Even though the pick-up pattern is omni, the body of the mic will interfere somewhat.
Not sure if the torrents are active, but there are 2 nights of The Dead/Warren Haynes from this past summer on bt.etree recorded wide split omni.

right on thanks for the help :)

or you could have them 7" apart with a baffle in between the mics.
I'm sure there's a size matters joke in there somewhere, but I'll just let it slide. ;D
I sense a new t-shirt coming though....
Tapers do it in the sweet spot, omni tapers spread 'em wide. :P

Any recomendations for using omnis not split indoors?
-
IMO, 35 feet split is way wide. I wouldn't go much more than 10 feet. When you go 35' wide, you suffer from the "hole in the middle." Jef and I did about 9 foot split at Darian Lake for the Dead and there was PLENTY of stereo seperation!

Guess the best way you could do it is Healy, which is mics orented as your ears are... I think it would have to be a great sounding room with little talking, and close to the pa to sound good. Or omnis onstage or stagelip are sweet though...

Would a Jdisc work indoors with loud PA's? Enter moke. I'm sure they work very well for chamber music, but with the usual loud stuff, I'd imagine you'd have to lookout for the same problems as with any omni recording. Chatty cathys, poor acoustics and get close.

So, what do you guys think about 13th row center omnis in a large theater for bluegrass music?
-
fyi - omni's are actually somewhat directional at higher frequencies
