I'm sure this question has been asked before, but I'm curious how often most people tape on average. Just for constancy's sake, we will count band + opener, as 1 time out.

missing option, as often as possible :)
I have been trying every weekend friday and saturday night.
So I am going to pick 5 or more times. for now.

yeah... I was going to put that, but I think we all tape as often as possible. For some it is possible more often than for others! Damn... every weekend? That is cool for sure. I'm running about 3 or 4 per month usually, and I thought that was quite a bit! Is that mostly local stuff or are you hitting a lot of big shows as well?

I generally make it out to 8-10 shows a month. Austin also gets a lot of week day shows, all within a few minute walk from my office(stubbs, antones, la zona rosa, the parish, the vibe, austin music hall, etc...).
-
3-4 times a month...would do more, but weeknights are getting harder and harder for me to do the older I get :)
-
not often enough. 4-5 shows a year, not counting the rare local act I catch.
-
overall for a year probably 3-4 a month, this winter hasn't been busy for me but Feb I have 4-6 shows depending how lazy I am, mostly national bands since my favorite local bands broke up and/or play the worst venues possible that isn't worth taping so I leave the rig at home
-
local and national acts.
I had nothing lined up this weekend, still trying to get over a cold.
Except I may go see Tuna saturday night now..

I'm pretty steady at about 5 times a month....

Some friends of mine lived in Austin for a while but I only got down there once. My trip was so short I didn't even get a chance to hit the clubs :'(

6 times so far this month.
I've got three gigs in a day next friday, and 4 total for the weekend that weekend, (not tomorrow, but 8 days out).
Being sick in december really threw my avg. out :(
too funny... we have 3 people saying almost never and I just assumed that was the mods. :)

I've been off since Thanksgiving, updating my rig. Starting tomorrow night in Niagara Falls, Gregg & Friends, I'll probably average out around 3-4 shows a month for the rest of the year. I'm concentrating on all the old grey beards: Joe Cocker, Cream, The Dead, Allmans, Santana, etc..

ember really threw my avg. out :(
do you count multiple acts in a day as one day of taping or what?
i guess if ya count how many acts ive taped this year so far, lets see maybe 5 then :)
-
fridays gig is three separate shows,.... 9am, 12noon, and 8pm, and then a chamber gig on sunday.
Each gig on friday gets a set up and tear down, so I'm calling it three different gigs. I could leave it set up, but I ain't leaving a bundle of gear in an unwatched hall.
no doubt, just wondering how other people referenced it :)
if i setup/toredown 3 times, id call that taping 3 times too :)
-
I put 1-2 a month but that's just random bands other than the two I follow around anywhere within a 300 mile radius (Guster & Blues Traveler). Guster will usually have a half-dozen shows per tour within four hours of me, so I probably tape them at least a dozen times a year...but in a typical month, 1-2 shows. Just one this month (Bob Schneider last Friday), only have plans for one next month (BHTM & Carbon Leaf). Then again, JAson (bhtoque) keeps team Boston's average WAY up. Good god that's a lot of recent torrents, man... ;D
-
im just geting started so i picked 1-2 times per month
i Hope that i can pick up some more speed ;D

edit:
the 9am and 12pm shows are for 1500 4th graders per show!! one of my favorite gigs of the year ;D
A Konc3rt 4 Kidz is what its called.
that many kids is an amazing amount of energy :o
Moke's got a festi!!!

i'm one of the 3. but i'm w/out transport right now. probly have to ride out the slow summer, but then the fall tours start up again, so......
-
A young 'un and a biz keep me down to 1-2 a month, if I'm lucky. Hitting a pretty good local show tomorrow, though....but that'll primarilly be a "what the heck" show for me.
But yeah, 1-2 a month. But boy are those shows worth it (even if they suck)!

Kirk, did you get most of your rig back?

Yeah... I have a 6-yr old, but I'm divorced, so only 2 nights a week and flexible at that. Any of you married guys getting out more than once a month or so must have some awesome better halfs!
yep!
What is really funny is the way they handle all those kids. They bus them in from all over the saddleback school district. Then group them up outside the hall. When the doors open they file the kids in and start filling the front rows -> rearward. And in a matter of minutes they have the hall totally full, and the "white noise" level of all those kids talking is tremendous. But as soon as the lights drop, and the maestro hits the stage, they are amazingly well behaved. The concerts are based around songs like the Loony T00nz soundtrack, a touch of classical, and they generally end it with something like the ET movie soundtrack with a video playing n the background of the real movie clip that they are playing to. They do this as if it were a Hollywood soundstage, and they were recording the soundtrack for the movie. Really cool stuff! 10yr old Mokey loves it!
I bet that just makes you smile thinking about it... little jammin ja-moke bustin a gut cuz his daddy is tapin'!

I try to catch every national band that comes within 200 miles of St. Louis. Feb is going to be a wicked month for me. Mulex2, Moe, Keller, Sts9, JMP, Moudest Mouse. But I didn't tape any in January. So it comes and goes. Lookin to do some A/B of some local stuff in march.

I don't have kids,..... they scare me to death!!

Probably in a year maybe 4 gigs,im not really into travelling miles and miles for gigs.I know a gig i cant get to will be available eventually.I tend to tape all gigs i go to though so i like to think even though its only a few times a year im making a cintribution.Going to tape a couple of local bands this sunday at a free festival to test my new binaural mics. Its a shame local bands cannot be posted on torrent sites as there is some good local unsigned talent out there.

why cant they be on torrent sites?

Was always under the impression if it was a little local band from your local bar etc it wasnt of any interest to anyone.Torrent sites are mainly full of major artists, but id be happy to torrent some local bands as ive done a few. :)

I average about 2 per month I'd say. Just don't get many bands coming through Phoenix as often as I'd like. Also tape some of the local bands too.

Slacker. I had 4 nights taping in the first 8 days of 05. ;D
Oh, and as far as the poll question goes, I average 2 a week.

I only torrent 1 in 5 I tape (rough guess) Side effect of spending all my free time out taping. ;)

i think i average around 3-4 a month, mostly local stuff. as of late, not too many indie bands that i want to see have been touring. actually even the local scene has been going thru a dry spell. However, it looks like this spring and summer are going to be rather busy.
seriously tho, i'll go a whole month without taping and then have 10 shows the next month. its come and go.
-
My historical average the past few years has been about 5 per month. Usually not less than 3-4, sometimes 8-9 -- and yes, my wife is very accomodating to my hobby. This month has been very slow -- only 2 outings. Though I skipped a couple for financial reasons, unemployment begins 2/11. That is going to put a serious damper on the amount of shows I get to. Could be good for my ski season though. ;D

I'm sure this question has been asked before, but I'm curious how often most people tape on average.
I tape at least once a week, sometimes 2-3 times a week...knowing that I'll tape alot, I bought a yearly pass to The Funkbox (Baltimore) that gets me into every show for a year (as well as staff parties that have a band). Since October, I've hit 26 shows...

On easytree, there was a group of us who decided to start a loop of a local artists we have taped. Each person fills a whole DVD up and adds it to the collection. I thikn there are 5 of us on it now. But I agree, no one cares about the local bands on easytree or any other torrent sites. There are some great local bands here in Albuquerque that I always wanted to torrent, but I knew the futility of such an act.

i haven't run in 2005 at all, hopefully tonight I will, I ran once in late 2004 but not like 5-6 months prior to that, and i have too much gear
-
How much does that run if you don't mind me asking.
$500...most shows at the Funkbox run between $5-15 (some higher), so when I was figuring out whether it would be worth it or not, I figured I needed to hit 40 shows to break even. Unfortunately, I failed to take parking into account and finding a free space near the club is rarely an option (I don't even bother looking anymore)...so I park at a garage nearby that costs me $9. I was never very good with math (I was a history major), so I've pretty much given up trying to figure out if this will ever work in my favor. I doubt it, because even if I did 100 shows (40 is the break even point), I still end up paying $900 for parking. Maybe I'll use that to try and get them to lower the cost of a yearly pass (I think I'm the only member of their High Rollers Club)...still, I'm gonna think like I'm getting a deal even though I know I'm getting screwed.
-
Maybe get them to talk to the garage and have a validation program or something that would cut your parking costs in half? If the club realizes that parking is tight in the area they could do some sort of deal together. Just a thought...
-
If my notes are correct, it looks like I taped 178 shows in 2004, which is slightly up from 2003.
The tough run, as I remember, was from 06/05/03 - 07/08/03. Out of thirty four or so calendar days, I think I recorded twenty seven or twenty eight shows.
No wonder I feel like I haven't slept in two years...
-
not often enough, need to start stealthing these concerts here.
-
Last year I had a stellar year and averaged almost 10 shows per month, which meant about 1 every three days. I never planned that, just happened.
I've hit 3 or 4 shows this year and hope for an average of 3-4/month Some months might be more - depends when Dylan announces a tour.
-
I use to be doing 2 a month, but since work got busy and the second kid came I have slowed way down, do the most in the summers for sure.

Thanks man, +T. Now I gotta figure out what city I'll be hitting, hopefully close to home.

I wish to change my vote.
I selected almost never because thats what it feels like, going through 2004 I used my gefells 7 times (not much), and my dpa's stealthing 9 times (with one failure). While this is more then one a month they mostly came in bunches and I haven't been to a show since the first week of november.
Hopefully 2005 will be better for taping as I plan to hit many queens of the stone age shows.
