So I went ahead and got the sound pro's right angle toslink optical cable. In order to go from my digimod ua-5 to my jb3 I put a radio shack toslink>mini adapter on one end. while testing my new cable I discovered that I only get a signal when the mini is twisted to just the right spot. Not twisting the swivel that's built into the cable but twisting the whole unit; even then it is very touchy and completely unacceptable for reliable field use. I bust out my old radio shack toslink cable and throw the exact same adapter on that and it works perfectly. I switched back and forth multiple times to get the same results.
Anyone have this happen? I might just email sp's for a replacement.

I got a sp right angle tos to right angle mini and it works great. no adapter needed. not as bulky as I would like but works just fine.

Yeah, go for the toslink to mini cable from SP. Several of us use those with great results. They are most definitely where it's at!!

I might have to get that, but after hearing all of the stories of tapers breaking off the ends of their mini optical cables in their jb3's I figured I'd go with an adapter so it could be replaced.

With a reasonable amount of care, you should be OK. That cable has right angle connectors on both ends, which helps reduce the chances of breaking it significantly (IMO at least). But I suppose there is still always that possiblity...
