Please excuse my ignorance...only been taping a few months and I've led a sheltered life.
When I bought my Studio Projects C4's, they came with a pair of shockmounts...for those familiar, are these the same mounts (circumference-wise): http://www.micsupply.com/schoepsstereoset.htm
I like Mic Supply and figure they'll get it to me fastest (hoping next day). Or can you buy them in a walk-in store?
I was setting up for Ekoostic Hooka last night and snapped the head off one of the mounts...taped it together, in a retarded way, but with the mic not facing the direction I wanted (if I weren't in a rush I could have reversed the t-bar and it would have been better).

no, they are not...thye look similar but the schoeps mounts are smaller and more expensive (~$60 per)...go to team studio projects in the team board section...I believe someone posted a like to studio projects web page to get these directly...

call me crazy...
but given the noise floor of the average "jam band" taping environment...I think one could VERY safely get away w/o using shock mounts at all...and never hear a difference.

I would tend to agree with Nick, but if a bunch of spun wooks start bumping into your stand, then you will hear it
-
I took the condom theory myself with shockmounts and windscreens.
Might as well use it if you have it. Better to have protection
in case of ? then not to use it and ruin the show.
Of course it is just a show and not a major responsibility like a child :P

I've always thought this privately, but I use them anyway.

Again, excuse the ignorance, I'm still at the stage where you fly by the seat of your pants, so my knowledge in this area (among many) is somewhat limited by what I've learned so far: without the shockmounts, all I have is the microphone connected to the xlr's and they don't balance on their ends too well. I need the shockmounts, or something else, so I can clamp the mic on a rail. In my time of need, I've been thinking about alternatives to the mount: would it work to have a square piece of foam, hollowed out for the mic and taped to a ledge (99% of the shows I tape are at one venue, with one foot metal ledge on the opposite side of a balconey rail)?

sounds like you could do with mic clips for what you do. if you have a local Guitar Center or equivalent, you could save yourself some $$ and buy some type of mic clips.

While I agree that on a stand, shockmounts can be overkill for what we tape...if you are clamping to a part of the venue, shockmounts are a necessity...especially if it is a balcony, lighting tressel, those types of things

I used to run CM300s from the raised floor in the balcony of the bayou in DC. I could touch the stand and feel the bass transfered from the raised floor. Immediately after I got suspension mounts, I noticed that the recored bass seemed to be tighter. I always attributed that to the isolation. Also I've been at several shows where due to weather or crowd issues, I had to move my rig while rolling tape. In those cases, there was no handling noise on the tapes. YMMV. I always use the shock mounts.

DONT SPEND ANY MONEY!!!!
email alan hyatt of PMI audio, he will send you a pair of replacement shockmounts FREE!!!
Alan kicks serious ass and shows that PMI is dedicated to standing behind the studio projects name and will support his product!
are these the first run of shocks or the second (do the elastics cross on top of the clip? if yes, then second, if no, then first)...if its the first run, they were pretty flimsy by comparison to the second run...also if worse comes to absolute worst, and alan wont send you free ones, i have a pair of older ones which are beat up but i dont use anymore (because alan sent me free ones), so id send them to you free and you could either use them, or use the parts you need.

before getting my shocks a few years ago, the 480 would pick up A TON of unwanted rubmle and wahtnot, i would NEVER run w/ out shocks again unless i completetly had to

Yeah, but you always have the antidipshit benefits.

I've heard nothing but good tidings about Alan Hyatt...personally, I'm less than thrilled with my interaction with him (sent him an e-mail in early Nov hoping to get the upgraded shockmount and he replied at the end of Dec by saying I should call PMI). In did call PMI this afternoon and spoke with Justin and he's sending the upgraded shockmounts out to me (I'm paying FedEx because I'm hoping to get the mounts in time to tape tomorrow night...but you never know).
Thanks for all the info....

sorry to hear your interaction with alan was disapointing...gotta love that theyll just send you the shocks, if you didnt want fedex it would be free. :)

I disagree 100% with bean's 100% disagreement ;)
I run shockmounts 25% of the time. There really is no NEED to run mounts for what we do, unless, as nick said, you are clamping to a fixed part of the room. It can't hurt to use em, but i don't think they are a necessity.
ymmv.

True, and if PMI wasn't giving out the shocks for free, I'd willingly shell out the fifty bucks that I see them going for elsewhere.
