Title: speak slow i'm new to playback. (heaphone amp content)
Post by: bagtagsell on February 01, 2005, 12:06:50 AM
Headphones: Senn 580s
Amp: Creek obh-11
Now what else do I need to get from my laptop to my headphones?  I have a vxpocket 2 if that means anything.  Do I need a Dac?

I'm not familiar with the VX Pocket but I'm pretty sure it has analog outs so all you'd need is a pair of cables to connect it to the headphone amp.  A DAC would definately be an upgrade but isn't essential, so I'd try it with the VX Pocket analog out and go from there.  BTW congrats on the new gear.  :)

Sounds like a nice combo, the Sennheiser HD-580s mates very well with tube amps.

i cant for the life of me remember the name maybe someone else can,  but there is a headphone amp that is usb driven which would take care of the laptop interface and you wouldnt need a vxpocket2. im looking for it now...

edit: found it. dont know if it suits your needs, but it gets great reviews. http://www.dansdata.com/bithead.htm

I am a VX Pocket 440 owner and they are identical except for the additional 2 channels on the 440.

All you need is a pair of XLR to RCA cables. If you are playing off the HDD then the VX Pocket is your DAC (24/48). This is what I do when i want to connect my lappy directly to my Stereo.

If you go with the M902 you have the option of going Lappy -> USB or if you want to use the VX Pocket Balanced XLR -> Balanced XLR in on the M902.

Very sweet. But a lot more $ then the amp u listed

I've had the 901 for about a year now, sure is sweet :)

for either the grace 901 or the 902, you could also go S/PDIF out of the VX pocket into the grace.  the 902 adds the usb option.
but I'd say the grace DAC is superior to the vx pocket, so going digi into the grace would be better than balanced XLR.

yes, but if you're looking into the addition of a DAC anyway, the grace units are certainly something to consider.

If you're doing a lot of headphone listening, read up on super-stereoism.
It is the opposite of binaural recording. Two track is designed (usually) for speaker playback.
Hence in headphones the channels are too isolated for long, confortable playback.
A very good headphone amp will slightly mix left and right channels for simulation of "open-air" leakage.
I'm still learning about psychoacoustics, so take my interpretation as a launchpad for getting solid info.
