Title: Nak freaks (s'plain this one)
Post by: peterbilt on February 01, 2005, 02:39:19 AM
OK, I'm not the most observant individual sometimes, but I honestly never noticed this before. Maybe it's because 2 look exactly like the Nak 300's I have used in the past, maybe it's because I was only in the need to run 2 at the time but what gives?

Obviously there are cap differences, but what gives with the "screening" of one, and the sectional type of opening in the other two? Is it maybe a later manufacturing style?

I apologize if the pics are enormous.

Im not positive about this, but I do believe that the mic with the CP-2 is actually a CM100, not a CM300. I owned 300's, but have seen pics of the 100's.

The mic on the left is NAK 300 - with a CP1 capsule

The mic on the right is a NAK 100 - with a CP2 capsule

On the bottom of the mic it says what it is, CM100 or CM300, maybe you have 2 CM300 bodies with one using the CM100 attenuator(the one with the CP2 cap). ???

Tony wins the prize!! I have also owned both 100's & 300's and they are both 300 bodies with a 100 attenuator barrel screwed onto the CP-2 cap. The attenuators for 100's look different than the 300 attenuators.

are you guys referring to the 10db pad?  if so, they are identical.  i have ts's cm100 and bornagaintaper's cm300 apart right now. gotta replace a resistor in the cm100 for the Franken-Nak mod.  the 2 pads are the same.

In that conversation I thought they were using "attenuator" to refer to the whole attenuator/preamp head - - ? Are the heads identical beyond the attenuator...?

Can you run the 100's using the same 9v battery as the 300s?

The 100s use 1.5 AAs , correct?

don't know if the cm100 can be powered by the same 9v battery as the cm300.  yes. the cm100 is powered by 1.5v.

Yes, the CM100 can be powered by the EV206 or any equiv. 9V barrel cell. My CM100 came with the little AA battery cups to allow use of standard 1.5V AA's in place of the 9V that the CM300's use. Quite handy actually   ::)

???. So what is the difference between 100's and 300's, other than the batteries? And to maybe answer the original question, which I thought was, "Is it OK to run 2 CM300 bodies with one having a CM100 attn. barrel and the other having a CM300 barrel"? Or maybe I'm reading this wrong.

I'm guessing that it's going to work out fine, judging by this response...

I'm under the impression that the pads in the 100's and 300's are the same, with the difference in the two being the preamp stage of the mics.

If I'm wrong please tell me so! ;)

I'm not over concerned because I do have three 300's, 2 having identical pads and the one having the pad from a 100.
I was just curious as to the differences sonically, whether it was going to cause any big issues in the future when I start running 5 mic mixes with my buddy's band.

Thanks for the info folks!
