Title: Best pre/ad for AKG 391's
Post by: geoff piper on June 17, 2003, 02:25:57 PM
Well now that I have a set of mics finnally I'm looking at Pre's and AD's next. So far ive heard Mp-2>adc-20, UA-5, and Mp-2>MSBM-1... My question is which would give me the best results with the akg's 391's. Also any other options. Thanks

I ran ps-2> ad-20 once. It sound real thin on the low end. I can send you a tape if you'd like. I just sold that stuff off and picked up a digi mod ua-5. I will be sending it back off next month for the warm mod. Ill let you know how it sounds thursday morning.

trust your ears...here are a couple examples:

First a couple with no preamp, just using phantom power and transformers for a bit of gain:

Toad the Wet Sprocket
AKG 391s->B-18s->AT CP8201->Oade mod SBM1->D100

http://www.archive.org/audio/etree-details-db.php?id=5385

Cast Iron Filter
AKG 391s->B-18s->AT CP8201->24 bit mod SBM1->D100

http://www.archive.org/audio/etree-details-db.php?id=3828

And a couple with the MP-2->SBM combo.

Particle
AKG 391s > MP-2 > Oade Mod SBM1 > D100

http://www.archive.org/audio/etree-details-db.php?id=4960

Cast Iron Filter
Matrix: (AUD): AKG 391s->MP-2->Oade mod SBM1->D100; (SBD): SBD->MiniMe->D8
(not a great example due to the SBD, but a nice freaking show!)

so I never heard it directly, but a guy here in Raleigh runs 391s>MV100>SBM1>D8.  Damn if I can remember his name...let me poke around the archive and see if i can find any of his tapes...

actually I heard the next-gen oade pre's will be smaller than a sonosax, have an internal battery that lasts for an entire tour, and be able to run 5 pairs of mics at a time, with full matrixing capabilities between all inputs and outputs.

and the funny thing is...there is a better chance of that delivering than core sound delivering a functioning PDA recorder

I ran 391->MV100->ad500 for a while. I always liked the results. I also ran 391->dmic20 for a bit. I like the mv100->ad500 better, much more natural sounding.
