Title: Mic for starter rig
Post by: Aut0mat1c on February 01, 2005, 09:00:26 PM
Hi all

I am pretty new here and had a question I hope somebody could give me advice on.

I just bought a NJ3 on ebay and am now looking for a mic. I don't want to pay too much to start off and I have read up on it a bit but after a while my head starts to hurt with all the cards, binaural,  pre amps and bla bla bla  :o

I am looking to spend around 100.00 and will be recording in stealth. Mainly arenas for pop and rock shows, and on occasion an acoustic set. So pretty much a mic that will do ok in various situations.

Was looking at the Giant Squids but people seem to go more with SP.

Any sguestions?

SP mics (the ones that use AT capsules) are sought for their quality/cost factor.  if i were in your shoes, i'd save up a little bit more and keep your eyes on the Yard Sale for SP mics. they pop up from time to time.

I think I am gonna go with the Giant Squid Omnidirectional Powered Stereo Mic with bass roll-off.

Will these be good for the situations I described above? The samples sounded pretty good.

I know you get what you pay for but to start out with they seem pretty good.

For arenas you'd be much more happy with a pair of cardoids from SP (read: cmc2/4). They are directional and will pick up less of the audience. Unless you are in a very good position the squids will pick up a lot of audience noise.

If you were planning on attending smaller shows the squids will do just fine though.

Giant Squid makes cardiod mics too FYI.  And I agree, from the sounds of what you want to record Automatic, cards are what you'd want to get.

Thanks for all the help guys.

Now I think I am going with SP-CMC-2 & Mini Battery Module with Bass Roll off. How does that sound?

Also, will I need the in-line level control or can you adjust the levels on the JB3 on the fly?

Good choice. Very nice starter mics.

Yes you'll definately need the bass roll-off.

I don't use the level controller on mine anymore (CMC-4>SPSB1>JB3),
as I've never ever brickwalled the line-in on my nomad.
And I've recorded some extremely loud shows at very small venues.
(Thank god for earplugs!)
So I set mine on max all the time.
On the other hand, it's not a big investment.
20US$ extra or something if I'm not mistaken.
I would have gotten the level controllers just in case,
although you might find yourself not using it.
