Title: male thread on stands?
Post by: kev B on February 01, 2005, 10:17:01 PM
Ok, so far the 2 stands that I have purchased have had a 1/4" male thread. Is this the standard for the stands we use in taping?

Well, if you got a Bogen/Manfrotto or some other light stand, it's the standard they use. Mic mounts are usually 5/8" from my experience.

Most of the "mic stands" we typically use to fly our mics are actually photo/lighting stands. Most ,if not all, lighting stands, regardless of make, come with 1/4" male threads.

fwiw, if your stand's mounting stud has enough OD (ie., larger than 5/8") you can take it to a small machine shop in your town and have them turn it down and put on 27 threads. if you do not have enough OD for a 5/8", then perhaps a 3/8" and use an appropriate adaptor.

it shouldn't cost too much since it's only about 15min worth of labor. i bought two brand new 9.5' lighting stands from ebay for $20/ea. and the stud was 1/4". so i had my buddy remove that and turn the stock down to 3/8" w/threads.

Bogen ships at least a couple - if not more - stands with a 5/8" male stud.  I love it - use a handy dandy 3012 adapter which doubles as a quick-release clamp, so to speak, add on the usual 3366 3/8" > 5/8"-27 thread adapter, and ready to go!

+T's all around. Thanks for the info. I may have an inexpensive design for a vert bar for sale and I was hoping to use a 1/4" adapter (they are easy to some by). Thanks  ;D
