Title: Wal-Mart battery - 9V or 7.2?
Post by: hexyjones on February 03, 2005, 12:44:21 PM
I read a bunch of the threads - and it seems unclear...are these things 9 or 7.2 volts...?

One the Wal-mart website, they only list one model - spec says 7.2

Do the stores have other models??

simple answer -- it depends.  Ordered mine from the walmart website, it sez it's a 9 volt and a voltmeter confirms it puts out 9 volts.  Others have checked theirs and found 'em to put out 7.2

My battery, which is an Initial model RB-270, is a 9 V battery.  I think that there must have been some that got out into the real world that were mismarked and this is the source of the confusion.  I don't know the model number for the 7.2 V version and our local Walmart does not carry the other model.  They only carry the RB-270.

I just bought two of these batteries on ebay (in Canada).  They were some kind of "open box" from Circuit City (USA) and they were labeled "ESA" brand.  They say 9V, 5400mAh.  I measured and they are 9.0V under load.  Exactly!  I noticed some high pitched whine under load.  I'm guessing there is a *switching* (ie., efficient) regulator in there, either converting 7.2 (2 Li cells) or 10.8 (3 cells) to 9V.  Anyway, they seem to work, and introduce no extra noise in my UA5.  I won't know the quality until I run one dry though.  So, there do appear to be different models.

BTW, has anyone measured the Phantom voltage of the UA5 (w/o load)?  People claim you can use 7.2 to for12.0V in this thing, but I would be careful bee I put mics on.

I have had zero issues w/ AKG 481/3's on a UA5 @7.2v NiMH.

Voltage is ~48V w/o load.  Just measured w/ my $10 RS multi meter so i can't get a very accurate read.

They can be either 9 or 7.2 volts. I was curious and looked in one of the local Wal-Marts. It had both in stock, with the same UPC and bar code. Only way to tell was to look at the battery itself and see how it was marked.

Don't know how you would be able to know what you were getting if you ordered one online.
