I'm an absolute newbe with laptop recording. I just bought a HP1170, to be used for work, and though it would be great to use in the field. I will start out with a VX pocket and record 2 channel 24/48 to the hard drive.
The HP comes with a DVD burner. Is there a special program I need to burn a 24/48 disc using this laptop? Any suggestion or guidence is appreciated.

search for the thread that discussed audio-dvd-creator. That should do everything you need to author and burn 24-bit to DVD for $40. I've used it to author but not to burn. Very easy to use.
If you need recording software, look into audacity. It's free and works well. Has a lot of options but is relatively easy to use the basic functions.
After you have some recordings to trade, look at dvd-decrypter for copying DVD-A or audio DVDs. It's free and will extract or burn ISO images.
