Howdy folks,
I am using a UA-5 for the first time. Is there a way to diasble the preamp for this device? I plan on running AKG461's > Sonosax > UA-5 > IBM Thinkpad. What would be the best configuration for this setup? A million thanks in advance,

There is no off switch for the pre, or way to only route the signal to the ad, but if you turn the xlr gain knobs all the way down, it is set to recieve a "line level" signal (per the manual)
Or you can go rca in on the back, same deal, just turn the gain all the way down.
You'll still be sending the signal through the ua-5's pre though.

Will he? - Isn't he bypassing the preamp circuit? (whos purpose is to raise mic to line level) - while there may be some extra gain in the level control -but that's not what I think of as a "preamp"

pretty sure the RCA's arent going through the preamp. The little knob is an attenuator adjust, not a gain. This is what i always thought. Could be wrong though.

Hmmm. Should I scrap the Sonosax and use the UA-5 for the pre and a/d converter? If it helps, I am going from the UA-5 to the Thinkpad via USB. Thanks for your help this far.

Not at all...I think you should record a set with each setup...then let us know which you prefer...
