...to my laptop? Is there any type of coaxial or optical to usb cunverter, or something?
-
there are tons of usb and firewire solutions from a ton of companies.
what's your budget?
-
Not really sure what the ranges are.....I'm looking to find either a box(battery powered of course) with a digi-coax in and a usb out, or a card that fits into my laptop that has an optical in or a coaxial in.....already have loaded soundforge 7.0 on my laptop...I really like the sound of my v-2/2k combo....just wasn't thrilled with 750 for a vx pocket......I've heard complaints from people on how securely they lock into the laptop
thanks alot

this is a whole lot better than a vx pocket. little more $$$, but damn fine box.

I think he just wants bit perfect s/pdif pass thru (not a preamp).
The M-Audio Transit is another thought - can't recall if it's been tested bit perfect but it's only $70 and has a good AKM codec in it.

if you go with the vx pocket, we can customize a dongle cable for you :)

you can run coax in to usb out. bypass preamp.

i have heard that usb is not the most realiable... especially if you plan to do 24bit

I take a SPDIF in to my USBPre from a V3 (24/44.1 and 24/48), have run this setup since fall 2002 with no problems.
Box is definitely overkill size-wise for what I am using it for, but FWIW I have to say the USB connection seems more robust that that little dongle on the VX pockets.
Plus once this thing saved me for the Dead at Red Rocks 2003, I forgot to take in the charged Ecocharge for night 2 (left the same battery in my bag that I used night 1), ended up getting low battery on the V3 after set 1. So I just ran mics>USBPre for set 2. Since it is powered off the USB bus, no extra batteries to worry about. Not as good sounding but at least I could run my own mics.
Also this thing is nice for taking a 24 bit SBD patch (it has both line and consumer "tape" inputs), with nice metering. This thing will just NOT clip going analog in, it must have some limiting circuitry in there (that is pretty transparent I should add), you can be pounding the red and still have it sound normal. While I am at it I should mention this thing sometimes clicks and pops like crazy when playing back from the analog outputs. No glitches when recording (analog or digital) but definitely very dirty analog playback.
Take care,
Ben

If you have firewire the m-audio firewire audiophile works well and is afordable if you score one on ebay. I paid $150 for mine and its easy to power in the field with a NiMH 12V 4999mAh battery, get 8 hours on one bat and they are small.

Will it take 96KHz?

The M-audio transit is intriguing, but I need to get my spldf converted to optical to use it.......would ad2k>C02>M-audio transit>laptop be ok?
