I tried an omni recording this week. I've got a pair of AT853 with Omni caps. They were nearly coincident (6" apart or so... sitting on my chest) and at an angle of approx 90 degrees (ie., +/-45 degrees from the forward direction). The recording is nearly mono, which I expected, but it is also lacking a lot of high end. It sounds dull and muddy. I think I was in the right position: I was close enough to the stage so that it made up 45 to 60 degress of my "field of view", and the speakers (tweeters) were "in view" of the microphones. It was a long narrow room, so maybe that contributed to it.
Anyway, can anyone explain the lack of high end? Also, what program would you use to boost it? I'm running the program Audacity under Linux, although I could use a Windows program if necessary. What I found was if I turned treble all the way up on my monitors it sounded better. Not great, but better. I'm not sure how to do this in software though.

did the mics have a clear line of site to the stacks.....you will lose all of the high if it is below the body of the person in front of you.....next time you are at a show drop your head below the chest level and then listen for a bit and THEN stand back up and hear the difference.....my guess you were having the line of site blocked.

Try tweaking up the high-mids...that often sounds like the treble you may be missing...also listen for any bumps in the mid-bass...remove them - that can some air also...
Lack of highs probably due to technique...get those things on the top you head...mics want some air behind them as well as infront..
Chances are, your chest absorbed most of the treble energy...
