I just bought a pair of AT831cW mics. Ebay, what can I say...
Anyway, they've got a funny 4 pin locking connector on them, intented to connect to an Audio Technica "Unipack" transmitter. I'm not sure if it is Hirose (HRS) or LEMO or something else. It has four connectors (in a square), has a screw locking mechanism.
So, is there a way to (cleanly) remove these. They appear crimped on somehow. Or maybe there is a source of male panel connectors I could use to mate with this. Yeah, I could just cut the wire, but I'd like to take it off nicely if I could. The intended application is to make my own battery box for these mics. And wire them in 3-wire mode, of course.

imo, cut the cable just above the connector and worry about it later.

yep just wack them off..they actually use a conductive apoxy to put them on (no solder) shitcan them man!

OK, I unscrewed the connector and unsoldered the wires.
Then I discovered something. Apparantly this mic has a load resistor, 2.2KR I think, right at the mic element. It has three wires:
Red +battery, eg., 9V
Yellow: Audio out
Shield: ground (audio and battery)
Normally one puts a load resistor, like 22KR between Yellow and shield. I do this for AT853 and for another AT831. But it seems this particular model, AT831cW I think, has a built in load resistor. The problem is this resistor only drops about 0.7V or so, so it limits the max SPL I think. I haven't seen any clipping but it is something to look out for.
Oh yeah, I also discoverd that the capsule unscrews. The capsule looks like the AT853 cardoid one, only a bit smaller. So I don't think there are other capsules you could put on. As far as sound goes the AT831 is similar to the AT853. Not as much bass, but that is not a problem for most recording. I can't tell any quality/clarity differences.
But I have one question. Has anyone heard of AT829? This is a cheaper lav mic for wireless systems. I can't find specs on it, but I wonder if it shares any parts, eg., body + FET, with the AT831.

there's a large difference in the sound of AT831 vs. AT853. i ran AT831 for about 2 years before stepping up to the AT853. the latter is much fuller. AT831's bass is lacking in comparison to the AT853 and sounds a bit too focused on the highs. AT853's response curve is MUCH flatter.

Yes, you're right. The AT831 lacks the solid bass. Even when I EQ after it still doesn't sound as nice. Very clear, and certainly acceptable, but just not as nice. So, to all you people out there considering the AT mics, go for the AT853! They are hard to beat. I'm curious now how others, like the SP C4 compare to the AT853. Hmm. I'm in no rush to change now...
