hey folks, I was just reading through this thread about copy-protection on a D8:

but then I noticed something else:
I was there, I think she ended up getting the signal from the m1, which BTW was Jeff from omaha who was running mod-461's > V3 (word clock coax mod) > m1 > you. His regular coax went to his dap1.
what exactly is a word clock coax mod? I know with the optical mod that grace does, the word clock is removed and the optical output is installed. is this similar, but put a second coax S/PDIF output in place of the word clock?
just curious, as I have never heard of this before.

that's what it sounds like to me since he references the "regular coax" and the deck recieving the mod out is an m1 and not a jb3 or other optical in device. you don't see many people patching sony dat's with the 7pin to optical...

It sounds like the coax mod was done throught he jack that normally a word clock would be connected. This allows this guy to run two coax out's, instead of installing another jack.
Just like you said...

What is the benefit of this over a barrel splitter or using an active 7 pin out of the M1?

I never cared for splitters, they can get lost... some are flaky and may not work
as for not using an active out of the m1, I always ran 2 digital chains whenever possible just in case... perhaps that was his thinnking as well
this guy could also use one of the aes outs to feed his deck but that would require an pulse transformer like the canare to step the signal down from 110ohm to 75ohm and also to adapt the xlr of the aes down to the coax. this all adds bulk though and having a 2nd coax out would be much easier.

yeah, I guess having a second coax out is easier than using a transformer to go from 110 ohm > 75 ohm. but I've been using the canare transformer for a while, not a single problem, and I'm sure it's cheaper than actually modding the v3...

That's exactly what it is. He said the grace team pulled the word clock and added the second spdif for $30! That sounds like a deal to me. Make somthing usefull out of a useless (for me anyhow) part. Also slims down the design without having a big ol transformer sticking out of your unit. BTW- he usually runs 2 decks, a dap1 and an m1.

Yea, I do that. Works fine. I don't have my V3 in front of me, but you need to use the right AES out to make it work. I think it's AES1.

correct ;)
aes2 is a pro-only output, unless you switch the jumpers inside to make it a consumer out :)

Nope, you're getting AES1 and AES2 confused. AES1 can be either consumer or pro (word format, always conforms to the AES electrical format), depending on how the internal jumpers are set. AES2 is always pro, no matter how the internal jumpers are set.

Which Hosa box? I assume since AES2 = AES/EBU, you're talking about the Hosa ODL-312, not the -276, yes?

Seriously though. I agree....always run 2 digi chains if you can.
I also just had the opitcal mod done to my V3...I have to give huge props to the guys at Grace. Everyone went above and beyond to accomodate my schedule (flew in and they did the mod on an off day....flight was late..and I was still taping that night). If they would only make something that competes with the 722/44.
