Right now, I've got SP-CMC-4's and a D8.
I want to move to something that's not primarily a stealth setup, but I don't even know where to begin to look or how much it's going to cost me for something decent. I assume almost anything is going to be an upgrade over what I have, but I don't know all the new parts I'd need to use my D8 with better mics. Are there any FAQ's or tips or anything on how to pick out a decent non-stealth setup?
I don't have a ton of money right now, so I'm really just wondering the ballpark figures on getting everything I need and then saving up (or gambling up!) to get the stuff I should get, rather than just getting what I can afford right now.

Can you solder? You can get yourself started with some mics, stand, cables, adaptors for ~$300. That's the basics and does not include a pre or ADC.
Nak CM 300's (with omni and card caps) ~$250 (there's a tri set on eBay right now, otherwise may be a little tricky coming across)
Cables ~$25 if you make them yourself
Stand ~$25 on eBay (or less, got an 8 footer for $12)
That's a starting point.

Or you could grab a new set of AKG c1000s for probably less than that. They're powered by a 9v battery, so need for phantom power. They also come with mic clips and are internally shockmounted, so that takes care of that. Fairly often you'll find sellers on eBay offering mic cables with them. Grab those, a xlr>mini plug Y Cable, and a stand and you're all set.
I taped quite a few shows with this exact setup a few years back, and was always happy with the results.

I'll just add that right now the AKGs suggest above are going for about $140/single or $260/pair on ebay right now. They look like another good option though....
And did forget to mention, the naks run on internal battery power as well....

*cough* Studio Projects C4s *cough* ;)
and a trusty UA-5 :)

okay thanks Brian, I missed that thread when i was digging around earlier, that pretty much answers all of my q's.
I think the C4's and the UA-5 seems like a decent rig to shoot for. If I understand things right, i can use the digital input on the D8 with a UA-5 right?

Yep, you will need a 7 pin to run coax out of the UA-5 :)

no sweat. I've got one of those already. (I'm lame and use my D8 to transfer recordings with cause i can't afford a separate DAT deck). I think that looks like the way to go for me whenever I get the cash!
