i've seen one used in the field (Wiltern Theater in LA) since there's an ac outlet in one section. but i wanted to see if these could be dc powered.
sure enough, i got hold of one and opened it up. there's an input transformer > bridge rectifier for the input voltage converting ac > dc. i measured the dc voltage....9v. hmmm, i could easily bypass the ac>dc converter and simply tap a 9vdc to the input side. well, i got it to work, but don't have anything that accepts toslink.
i also removed the ac transformer which really lightened the box by a huge factor.
anyone with an outboard adc and a jb3 wanna give this a run and report back?

I got a RMR-D3(looks identical except for the black vs. grey 7pin) that i'm sure is 9v as well. I'll bust it open and rig something up. I can't verify that mine is 9v b/c it was a euro model running off 220.

ha - I have one of these that is sort of screwed up, too...there is a thread about the fuse somewhere...

You should be able to provide power directly after the transformer

see what your secondary coil on the xformer is outputting. i measured 10vac. i'd bet that yours would be somewhere in that ballpark.

Well - if i apply some DC - the thing seems to come on...i.e. the green light comes on...
But, no light from the toslink...I tried to pass a coax signal - that wouldnt work either...
I dont have the 7 pin dongle attached to the board at the moment - perhaps that needs to be attached...?
Also - possible mine is just broken otherwise...

yes. i checked all outputs/inputs except for the toslink since i don't have any toslink cables. i can see the transmitter light, however.
i fed my M1 a digital signal from my home deck. the 7pin worked fine. i reversed it and fed my home deck a digi from my M1.
i was operating the RMR on a 9v li-ion battery.

Not to keep bugging you on this one...but were you able pass a coax signal throught the unit, independent of the 7 pin...?
I have to dig out the dongle and check it with it attached...not sure if that would make a difference...also have to consider mine was dead to start with...but at least the light comes on now - thats a start...
But I think not seeing the TOslink light come on is a bad sign...

Big +T to Marc for modding my formerly useless RMR to take 9V DC power. I use a 9V AC adapter for home use, but it will run on a standard 9V battery. I have not run any battery runtime tests, yet.
As for Marc's I/O tests, my tests had slightly different results. Here's what I did:
M1 > RMR via 7-pin >
-RMR coax out works
-RMR toslink out works
CD/DVD player > coax out > coax IN on RMR:
-RMR 7pin OUT works
-RMR toslink OUT works*
-RMR coax OUT works*
*toslink and coax outputs were only active when the M1/7-pin was in record mode
HHB830 > optical out > optical in on RMR:
-RMR 7pin OUT works
-RMR toslink OUT works*
-RMR coax OUT works*
*toslink and coax outputs were only active when the M1/7-pin was in record mode
Seems like this DC-powered box would allow you to take either optical or coax input to a deck connected via the 7-pin and provide a feed to both the coax and optical outputs. If you don't have a Sony deck, it may not be very useful.
