Title: JB3 mic in?
Post by: divamum on March 08, 2005, 11:47:49 AM
Hi all -

I'm sure this MUST have been discussed, but I couldn't find it (the term "mic in"  appears enough in this forum that when you search you get so many  hits it's not necessarily much better than reading backwards!)  Thanks in advance for your patience :)

I upgraded to the most current firmware (finally got this thing running, it would seem) and I note that in this version there are far more recording options, not least of which the gain choices and "mic in"

Does that mean there IS a built-in preamp in the unit? Or just that they have software-tweaked something? Or....?

Thanks for enlightening me. I was under the impression that the JB3 could ONLY go line-in, so I'm now thoroughly confused.

Also, with the gain selections on the unit itself, can those be used in combination with an external pre, or are they exclusively for mic in, or....?

I'm sure these are the dumbest questions ever, but I'm trying to get to grips with this machine before an important rehearseal tonight and just need to get as much info as possible - I have to guesstimate levels (since it's superstealth and I daren't have the unit in open sight at all) and am just trying to figure out what I'm doing!!!

Many thanks in advance -

M

The general consesus is the mic in is unusable...it just sounds like crap no matter what...

If you use the analog in - just leave the levels set to the default (0db) and drive the unit with your preamp...only add gain on the JB3 if you absolutely must...

I had the misfortune of taping A Perfect Circle and The Mars Volta via mic-in.  It took a ton of work to make the recording sound listenable.  Never ever touch mic-in on that beast!

Sorry to nitpick, but for the sake of clarity, you mean mic-in right.  :)

when you go mic-in you use the jb3's internal preamp. this is not a wise move typically as 1) the preamp pretty much sucks and 2) it often sounds bad due to harddrive sound being picked up as well as other aspects.

i used mic in for one stealth show and really it wasnt that much different then line in but was much more boomy. The internal preamp i have found to be ok for going positive line in up to +3 or 4 but the one time i went negative the recording didnt turn out well. I dont trust the JB3 preamp at all........

oh hold me back...
I'd recommend using the USB input for the Duran Duran show.

(was that out loud?)  ;)
