Is this worth trying if I've never done it before ? I lent my deck to a bandmate, told him to unplug from the battery when done....he didn't, the battery drained to nothing with the tape inside; now the deck cuts off/on and of course i can't get the tape out.
sound like an easy fix ? any help (with langerado just around the corner) is appreciated.
thanks,
john

Exactly what is keeping you from removing the tape?
Doubt the batteries had anything to do with it...I wouldnt blame your bandmate...yet.

This sounds right. If you use the internal battery sled, the deck should recognize low battery state and unload the tape from the heads.
What kind of tapes are you using. The Sony DATs are bad about loading in my D7 ever since they changed the shell.
Can you get the door open but the tape shell just comes about 1/8" before being held back? If that is the case, the tape didn't unload properly and is out of the shell around the mechanism somewhere.
If that is the case, I'll share more info. I never had the door not open so I can't help with that.

Yeah, if the tape is stuck outside the shell, I've had luck holding the deck upside down with the door open and just jiggling it a little bit.

a friend and i are gonna take a look at it tonight...he swears he can get the tape out, but i'm afraid that there might be some other damage due to the fact that the battery was left plugged in.....at some point before it died, i'm sure it was only putting out 4-4.5 volts , which is not good for the deck if i remember correctly
.
thanks for the input, i'll let you know how it goes....

Offhand I'd say that's worse for the battery than for the deck. The deck has auto-shutoff beyond a certain point but if you overdrain the battery, it'll kill the battery...

good point about the battery, but i didn't know about the auto-shut down on the deck....that makes me feel better, although last nite i had no luck getting the tape out.... it's gonna have to go to mr plotnick anyhoo :)
anyone know how to take off the back of a d8 ?

I have a d8 service manual hosted on my web site (http://mogwai.live.free.fr/sony_tcd-d8_service_manual.pdf) (.pdf ; 5,83Mo)
It will be removed from my website shortly so get it quickly and spread it !

Take the screws out of the back of the top and you should be able to remove the lid. Carefully though. Will it not pop the door at all? That's not normal if it is just a stuck tape.
