Title: Newbie - Live Tapiing with Sony MZ-R 70 minidisc (stealth & soundboard question?
Post by: resonatorman on March 16, 2005, 05:33:10 AM
G'day Folks
I am going to a few Chris Whitley gigs when he hits Oz in 2wks. HE is taper friendly & was thinking of taking my'ol MD along to get the shows. My questions:
1. if I am able to patch into the soundboard are there any type of cables that I should have with me that would run from the desk into the MD?
2. If I can't do option 1. & need to record with a mic, I already have a Sony ECM T145 lavaliere mic (that I have used for lectures in the past which is ok), will this cut the mustard for a live music recording? If so should I run in on the mic input? or (I have read that it maybe better) to use the mic to run into it's supplied battery compenent then into the line-in, is that correct? would that work better? in Oz we have limited range of mic's & accessories for MD's & was considering getting a Sony ECM-ZS90 Switchable Stereo Zoom Microphone, anybody have any experience with this mic? . Any tips or suggestions or advice most welcome.

Thanks
Jamie

concerning the board patch - do a quick search- that's been discussed many o' times.   ;)

Concerning the mic - if you can give an idea of the budget you are wanting/willing  to spend, we could probably give you some suggestions that work better.  I am not familiar with either of the mics that you mention, but what I would suggest is that you try to use line in, if possible.  You might be best off setting it up as you stated for line in (which sounds like it should work, to me) and try to record your stereo at a louder volume, and listen to the recording, and see how it does.

Otherwise, you might have to use the mic input.  At any rate, you still have some time to get an order from soundprofessionals.com if you hurry!  Check out their "binaural microphones" and battery boxes there to begin with... and check out the stuff in the yard sale here...

Hey hey! cool to see some more Aussies around, where you at? You might wanna check out the team australia thread on the team boards, theres a few up in Sydney and I'm in melbourne. I'm a MZ-R 70 user myself, or was till it died in the ass, now I'm just borrowin a friends Hi-MD for the moment. As for sbd patches, in Melbourne I've generally found the boards to have RCA outs, or occasionally a stereo (or mono) 1/4th....so either of those > stereo 1/8th should be all you'll need for that. As for the mics, I'm no expert, but you'll find your best bet is orderin overseas when it comes to stealth mics.

Anywho welcome aboard!

Chances are - if there is board access - you would have to be lucky to be the first device of the board...more likely you will be taking a line patch from another deck - so - 1/8 stereo to L/R RCAs might be good to have...
