Title: Turn around time on a JW mod?
Post by: johnw on March 19, 2005, 12:55:03 PM
I shipped my 460s out on 3/1 and he received them on 3/7. When I talked to him he said 4-5 days for the mod. I checked today on the pre-paid UPS return tracking # and he still hasn't sent them back.

Anyone had mics done recently by him? Do you remember how long that took?

I figure I'll give him a call on Monday to see what's up unless it usually takes 2+ weeks to do the mod.

I think you'll be happy with the mod, but let us know your impressions afetr you get em back and had a chance to use em.

Keep us updated. I'm getting ready to send mine out, but a little leary of turn around time as I have a full schedule starting April 7. May would be a better month to send them out, depending on how long it takes.
Thanks, Tony

Just talked to him - he's been out sick with the flu. Told me it should be another week or so.  :-\

To be honest I don't know if I will be able to accurately discuss any differences after the upgrade since I've moved from a UA5 to a MME. I would guess that both the "new" mics and the pre/ad will make an impact on the sound.

I shipped the mic bodies in my pelican case out by UPS ground on 3/1/05 with a prepaid UPS ground return label, a check for $350 and a note explaining what I wanted done and that I wanted any left over parts back. He received them on 3/7/05 and sent them out to me on 3/24/05. They were delivered to me on 3/30/05. The mic bodies had a silver sticker applied above the AKG label and he included an invoice and the parts in a plastic bag. It took a lot longer than I expected, but he was out sick for a while and I couldn't have used them during that time anyway. Overall, I am very pleased although I haven't used them to record a concert yet.

The stickers are a new addition to the mod - a really good idea.  My bodies show no signs of modification - just have to take my word for it!

Enjoy them!

I guess the stickers add some authenticity, but they kind of make the otherwise all black gear stick out.  8)

for those that have had this done, do the mics come back "matched" or close to in your experiences? my 460s are probably like 10db or so off from each other and i really would like a more matched pair, especially if i'm going to invest in the mod. then again, i'd really love to stealth with the ck6x caps too so i may go with jk labs when jon gets upbacked up. it's one way or the other..i can't decide

I peeled the stickers off, but saved the parts and invoice

do you always leave the caps on the bodies?  try switching the caps and see if you still have the same mic  level as before or did they switch.  could be your cap.

Best way to do is to leave the mics in one cofig and see which one is hotter...then switch mics & caps as a set and see if the hot side is now on the other channel.

if it switches then cables to jb3 are ok...so switch just the caps and see if the hotter side swaps channels again.
if it does it's the caps...if not it's the bodies.

I bet that the jwmod will bring the mic bodies closer together since the caps and the chip are replaced  (+xfr)

yup, i've done all that. it's definitely the bodies. it happens with both sets of caps (61s & 63s) and with cables swapped.

I'd give him a call. If it is truly the bodies (and it sounds like it is), then 10 dB is a huge difference and my guess is that there is something seriously wrong with one of them. He doesn't really repair microphones, so you may have to send them to AKG to get the less sensitive mic repaired/evaluated. But again, give him a call before you do anything.

yea, well i bought them off of someone on here and they had all kinds of issues. one of the caps was messed up and had a grounding issue and had to be replaced as soon as i got them. i was told they were slightly off, but i'd say it's at least a 10db difference. i'm not going to pay akg $150 to have them "rematched" though and then $400 for the mod too. i'd just sell them on ebay or something and try and find a new pair round here or wherever.

I bet you have some bad caps in the body...JW replaces all that...keep in mind the mics work and he replaces most of the active parts so good chance you can get back in the saddle....talk to jw and let him know that they are ~10db off and want to know if after his mod that they will be closer....bet they will.
another thing, if you are using a preamp and you do not have any sonic response difference (meaning both mics resopnd to the same freq the same just one is lineraly 10db lower than using the preamp is an option to re-gain 10db.  BUt I'd talk to JW...call him as he is not very responsive to E's.

yea, i'll have to find out. i have a ua5 so i can adjust the gain but it's a pain in the ass to not be able to crank up the gain much b/c one channel is near maxed out a lot of the time
