Title: Where can I get mic Foam???
Post by: KLowe on April 04, 2005, 10:41:15 PM
Don't know what section this goes in so I'm posting here.

I want to mod some cigar boxes for some mics I just picked up.  Anyone have any idea where I can pick up some foam peices?  The kind that doesn't "shed".

Thanks in advance for any info.

Kevin

If you have a photo supply store in your area you may be able to find some "pick & pluck" foam there.  Some fabric stores also carry it.

if you know the dimensions you can order it from B & H thats assuming the pelican case is the same size as your cigar box.

there are other sizes on their site too

I found a large piece of this product that was called fake foam or something like that at a Hobby Lobby (big chain hobby store) It's like regular foam but it won't shed and is a little denser. I used it to line an old gun case that I keep my gear in and it works great.

Home Depot--weather stripping.  They have strips of foam that's 1" or so square, no adhesive.  I've used it for windscreens and it's worked well.

I've used foam from Hobby Lobby before.  You can easily cut it with an electric carving knife - you know, the type that is supposed to be used for cutting ham or turkey slices.  They work great for cutting precise and complex shapes in polyurethane foam.

More recently, I saved the foam topper out of my bed when I replaced the visco-elastic foam with newer foam.  That stuff's harder to cut than normal polyurethane foam because it's a bit tacky and it drags against the knife.  It's very similar to the foam that they use for ear plugs.

Foam Depot  - I don't think that they are a chain, they're in West NJ.
I use a hot ni-chrome wire to cut, runs on 2 D cells.
I haven't seen one for sale in years.
The wire can be shaped as needed and melts a smooth edge on the foam.
