Title: background noise
Post by: dgodwin on April 16, 2005, 04:29:22 PM
I recorded a show last night, and throughout the recording is a loud hum.  Source info:  akgc1000s->ps2->SBM-1->JB3  I also used a D8 to monitor the recording.  Today I was able to deduce that the noise comes from the D8's light, as when it's on it causes the hum.   Did anyone else ever have this problem, and does anyone have any suggestions on what to do to correct the problem.  A sample flac can be found here (http://www.dgodwin.com/bt/efo2005-04-15sample.flac)  FWIW the show is eddie from ohio in hamilton, Ontario, and there were only 7 people at the show.  They used a very small PA and the drums weren't mic'd at all.  This particular tune (O, Canada) was performed off mic.

I've always been told that lights can interfere with recordings.

I'm not sure which noise your talking about because I can hear 2 types.  One that is perpetual through out the whole recording (which I was able to easily and effortlessly remove with goldwave) and on that first occurs at 11.346 seconds and agian at 28.5.  Which one are you talking about?

Agreed - there are 2 sources of noise.  In addition to the noise from the D8 light, I hear JB3 analog recording noises.  How did you wire this rig up?  The JB3 was not receiving a s/pdif input.  It's possible to filter out the D8 noise (using a sample for noise reduction) but I don't know how to eliminate the JB3 hard drive noise.

The JB3 was receiving an optical input from the SBM-1.  I have a 7 pin -> toslink cable, and then a toslink->mini cable.  I was mostly referring to the whole background noise, the one that's in the whole recording.  Also, how do I eliminate the "hard drive" noises?  I'm eliminating the D8 from my chain, so that will get rid of the perpetual noise, but have no idea what causes the other noise.  Thanks!

The only solution to the light buzz is to turn the light off. Unfortunately it's a known problem (see here (http://rockpark.com/d7/8_light.txt)). :(

That's really weird because the hard drive noises only occur when using analog input.  Exactly how were you monitoring with the D8 - was it plugged into the JB3's line or headphone output?

Only other thing I can think of is the JB3 sitting on or near the SBM-1 and inducing noise on the hard drive writes.  ???

Yeah, that's what I was going to ask...if you went analog out from the JB3 to the D8, I could see the D8 "hearing" the JB3's hard drive. No practical experience but that's all I can think of...

The source went SBM-1->D8 and JB3   The d8 was plugged into the 7 pin dongle, and the JB3 was connected via the 7 pin female plug on the sbm-1.  I have one of the DIY 7 pin -> toslink cables made by fozzy.  Here's a pic that shows everything but the d8, which is cut off at the top  (http://www.dgodwin.com/sbm1jb31.jpg)
