Title: Creating 24bit from 16/48 kHz??
Post by: spott on April 24, 2005, 05:09:32 PM
Ok, I just got this Dead show off of bt.etree.org - It claims to be a 24 bit remaster... Can this happen?? Aren't recordings only as good as the source (i.e. Cass 2 > DAT will always have some hiss).  Then I did some more snooping and found the Phil & Friends show http://www.archive.org/audio/etree-details-db.php?id=23029 that claims to do the same thing... Can anyone shed some light on this??  ???

Thanks,
Spott

Tech Notes

SHNs were decoded to wave and SF 6.0 was used to reassemble
the tracks back to 1 long wave.  CEP2.0 was used to align &
synch both of the sources.  CEP was used to do the multitrack
mixdown to 24/44.  DiscWelder was used to author and create
the DVD-Audio.  This is a 55% SBD, 45% AUD mix.

The remasters this guy has done have created some real controversy.  I remember hearing some nasty phase issues in the later part of this set, though.  Sounded like the two sources were drifting out of sync...

Oy vay, I think all that matzoh has gone to my brain... no upsampling occurs but it's 24 bit wise, weird

Not weird, false.  The 16-bit sources are upsampled to 32-bit by the s/w used to mix down the multiple sources, and then dithered back down to 24-bit.
