HBRSB play a shit hole bar/rest in Santa Barbara and the crowd is usaually drunk and comes to talk more then to listen during the show. I have tried a couple times w/ my stand (out in the crowd) but this time I have my Banfrotto Quick clamp and want to try clampin' it to the stage w/ my Omni caps on. Any one try this for HBRSB and have any suggestions ? Such as whut to set my UA5 at since I'll be that close ( my guess would be @ around 12:00) or placement of my C4's w/ omni caps on (I well be using my swivel t-bar). I might be able to get a SDB feed but I prefer Audience and Matrix probally would not be a good method here considerin' I only have 15' cables and the crowd sucks. Thanks in advance.

i set up at the stage lip in oxford, MS... same type of crowd... ran the TLs XY (cards) right near one of the monitors and it came out pretty well.
with the omnis... if you can get the mics set up between their mics on 2 seperate stands, about 1/3 of the way in, from each side of the stage, with 1/3 of the stage between them, then it would probably sound OK... if you had more cable, I would say to put them up on the far edges of the stage...
i have taped onstage and used DIN, ORTF, XY, and blumlein... never used omnis though.
-
So when you split your mics like that, what type of stand do you for on-stage recording? Is is just a shorter type of stand?
-
i would use a standard mic stand or a kick-drum stand... one with a 10-20 lb base on the bottom of it, with a small footprint.
-
one like this...

Do they sing? Just be sure you'll be able to pick up enough vocals through the stage monitors.
-
+T keepongoin' thanks for that pic! I guess the main thing is to find out what's coming out of those monitors to make sure you're capturing everything.
-
that is what i did there for garaj mahal... they don't sing much, but Fareed's guitar was quiet in the house mix, but loud in the monitors... it sounded great.
-
I've heard one on-stage tape of hbrsb and it blew. Last time I saw them they had had NO stage amplification... everything went into d/I boxes and then to the console. This is worse case scenario for stage taping. A band like Garage Mahal is different because they have large guitar, bass and keyboard amps on stage, and THAT is what you are recording. IMHO a pull from the monitors is going to suck. The only thing you can really hope for is a VERY quiet audience so that you can pick up sounds directly off the acoustics of the instruments, and the vocals right off of their mouths. That is a crap shoot though... I would go for the sweet spot. The mix off the monitors is not meant to sound good, it is meant to give information to the guys on stage... it is not usually a full range mix. " ...hey Josh, give me a little more mando in my monitor" You hear that on a million tapes.

When I saw them in January of this year everthing was electric including the bass bryon was palying and they had stacks on both side of the small stage. I think they have been messin' w/ there setup lately and have ampfied there instrurements.

if that is the case, you will get the music fine and you will be counting on the monitors for the vox.

By electric, do you mean plying through an amplifier (like an electric guitar), or just plugged in (as into a DI box)
-
I believe everyone has a pickup put into their instruement and Bryon has a new electric acoustic bass with built in pickup kinda like a Wasserman(old bass player for Ratdog) deal.
PEACE
-
Yeah,I was pretty sure of that, Just wanted to clarify that for the original question. So they are plugged in through DI boxes, but not playing through amps, so not really electric. They also have been using In Ear monitors. So that means zero stage volume on anything. Definitely should bag running onstage and run out in the Aud or go for a SBD feed.
-
good catch brad... this is what I was trying to say.

Thursday is close and I was wondering if I stated that my clamp and mics would be DFC clamped onto the stage skirt. Any difference in opinion?
Peace
-
well, thursday came and went... but, i would have gone further back if they are using IEMs... this is newish for them.
-
I may be missing something but if their insturments are not amped on stage wouldnt it be pointless to run onstage? Plus the fact that they have vocals makes a on stage less than desirable because the vocals would suffer. You should either SBD or audience. I know you want to avoid the chatter but find the sweet spott and running a little above the crowd and try to get some quiet friends to hang around your gear, this appears to be your best choice.
-
Right on!!! I was just trying to avoid the audience because last time every drunk tripped aleast five times on my stand and I pulled a far from desiberable pull that night and they played a pretty hot set. I might try SDB but I was wondering if anyone knows the name of the sound guy. I have it on some of my tapes but I am not sure if its the same guy? Also they use the rest/bars SDB when they play this hole in the wall so I hope this isn't a problem.

Sound guy's name is Josh. He is TAPERFRIENDLY in every way. Super nice guy. He has a pretty good ear too, so you should get a good mix esp. since they are using di boxes.
Matt
***edit*** house PA or not, if there is a way to get you a patch, Josh will hook you up. Just ask nice! ;D

I guess it's a little late now but josh is super cool and i'm sure would have given you a board patch if you asked.

Just curious how you ended up setting up. I am going to tape them tonight at the Other Side in Missoula. There's usually another guy there (Pastor Tim I think) who patches off of the SBD and last time he didn't run any patches from his rig. Thought about setting up on stage as well because the set up at the bar doesn't offer very much protection for the stand if you set up in the audience. I guess I will jusr have to see, leaving in about an hour.

Do not bother setting up by the stage they are using in ear monitors and their insturments are not amped this set up will result in a terrible recording. Set up in the crowd or patch from the SBD.
-
Thanks, that's what I figured, just curious if he tried the onstage setup. I am keeping my fingers crossed for a patch.
-
I'm curious if Pastor Tim showed up! I'm bettin' not. He should be freaking out by now about his drive to MN. I'm curious nonetheless though.

Pastor Tim was not there. Josh is THE man and hooked me up with a really great sounding patch. I haven't seen a soundman work that hard in a long time, and you can definately hear the very finely tuned adjustments, even at the shitty sounding venue last night. This was my first attempt at taping on my own, and Josh made it easy, and I couldn't be happier with the results.
-
Do you have Highspeed? If you do could you upload it to the archive?
-
It will be a little while till I can txr the show and upload it. I recorded on MD so there is of course some loss due to compression. I can still upload if you would like, but I know that Josh (soundman) was burning on the fly there and he said he has someone that uploads to the archive, it could be a while I would guess since they will be touring pretty hard up through High Sierra. I have never uploaded before, and figured since his source was purer it would be better. Is this any issue for the archive? I know that there are multiple sources for many shows, but ours would both be SBD, mine just a little lossy.
-
I can wait for him to upload it. Just wanted to make sure the shows were getting on the archive. Glad you walked with a good recording.

Josh should be the official break in a new taper guy. Just the nicest guy in the world. Some engineers are cocky basterds but Josh is different... good fit with that band because they are all the same way... very humble group of guys. I'm anxious to see them next weekend at the Wu reunion. I'll be sure to let Josh know how much he gets fluffed around here. They are on the main stage this year so I will be running my rig behind him, and I'll make sure to get that on the archive as quick as I can. I think they will be doing PT's church service again, and last year I was blindsided and only managed to get a mono recordinng of part of the service. This year I'm running split mbho omni's > v2 and will do my best to bring home the heat. The service last year was very special to me regardless of my 1/2 assed recording.

I ended up 20' DFC DIN but my stupidity and shyness stop me from having a good tape w/o the stupid crowd. This is last time I record HBRSB @ SOHO from the crowd. Next time I am goin' to rap w/ Josh and get a patch for this place because its definetly woth it. Any one know what kind of cable ya need to patch with? I have XLR, rca, and 1/4".

You should just about have it covered with those three cables. I would probably also get an adaptor to go from XLRM > XLRM and vise versa small. Can definitely be handy to have.. Good luck on future efforts!
