Title: Whats a good STARTER RECORDER? I need help!
Post by: xodusattack on April 25, 2005, 05:14:27 PM
Hi everyone....Im new, but I love live recordings.

I want to get a small (sorta pocket sized) recorder to record live shows with.

Are there any good recorders that don't require HUGE mic connections to hide?
Whats a good affordable MD recorder?....are MD's reccomended?
Whats a good affordable DAT recorder?...are DATs reccomended?
Also, whats the best/worst recorder on the market right now?

What I really wanna do is just record live shows, and get them on my PC(hopefully lossless), so I guess there must be a USB connection....correct??

THANKS EVERYONE!! :)

Search the archive there's tons of good information there. http://taperssection.com/index.php?board=14.0

There are many variables...what is your budget? Stealth or open taping (guessing steath?) Do you have mics/battery box or a preamp already?

Most folks recommend the Nomad Jukebox 3 which is a hard drive recorder.

Welcome to taperssection. :)

Hey dude. I'm in the same boat you are, starting out, pricing stuff, not knowing what I'm exactly doing, etc. Everyone who uses a JB3 loves it. I hope you weren't talking about the mics in that $200 figure. After I did the math it's going to cost about $500 with everything.

Yea, well the JB3 sounds pretty good.  It looks like I'll need

-The JB3
-MICROPHONES $139.00 (stealth type mic)
-extra Battery box $59.00.

So yea....it looks like      $450.00 - $500.00

I still have to save some cash, and check somethings out, but I'll probably be picking everything up real soon.

Oh yea,...... Do I really need an extra battery box???  Or is it just for longer sets, like festivals etc...

THANKS 8)

the battery in the battery box should last you a couple of months.  if you have one, i think you'll be set.  just change the battery in it on a regular basis (every couple of months or so depending on how much taping you do)

To answer your last question: USB is not the only way for lossles transfer.
JB3 uses Firewire in addition to USB1.1, which is in fact faster.
And when it comes to MD, a PC with optical in will do the job (but then you most likely need a home deck MD with optical out in addition to the portable model).

If you can live with the slightly more-than-pocket-size JB3, i'd say go for it.

Depending on how strict you are on the size: If you won't accept anything bigger than the front pocket of your jeans, JB3 is out I'm afraid.

Stepping down in size from JB3, the only sensible gear within your budget would be second hand deals on small DAT recorders, like M1 or D100. Others can tell you more about them.

Thanks for the extra info.............I just checked out some info on both the M1 and the D100.
They sound interesting also.
Do you know much about them?

There's lots of info about them. Search here on the board, every aspect you could imagine is covered.
Here's a good start:

And read this FAQ first, before you make up your mind:
http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=29057.msg365162#msg365162

Again, if size is imperative to you, a D100/M1 is probably the best within your budget. Since they're so inexpensive second hand, there's no good reason to go for compressed recording gear (MD).

But consider the additional cost for the tapes compared to JB3 in the long run...
