Title: Much advice needed m248 content
Post by: bagtagsell on May 05, 2005, 03:53:45 AM
Hey I just bought Nick's Akg 460's>M248.  Since I sold everything I had, I'll need to buy some stuff back.  So what should I run?

1. M248>MME>Hosa>Jb3- man thats a lot of boxes/power/etc.  I would upgrade to the maudio 24bit reocrder in July

2. M248>Modsbm1>Jb3- small is good.  7 pin>optical is not fun.

3. Sell the m248 and buy a v3>Jb3

4. Sell the m248 and buy a 722

5.  Any other suggestions...

This is what I'd do!  7pin>optical is easily solved by TS's Fozzy - he made me a DIY 7-pin optical output cable that pretty awesome, and durable.

460->m248->mod. SBM-1 is a fantastic rig and you will pull some good tapes. if you want to run m248->mini me you'll need to bring small screwdrivers to adjust the trim pots, this can be a pain in the ass at a show. i suggest calibrating them using the directions found on sonic sense. i personally run my 248 about half gain( knobs at 12:00) and the rest of the gain comes from the mini me. this should also sound really good. i'm sorry i can't help with the 722, but i know nothing about the unit. another thing is to get those 460s modded by J.W. which comes highly reccommended. i hope this helps. If either of ya'll are looking for a 7pin > optical just shoot me a PM.  I am not planning on offering them for much longer(SBM might be sold), I can't see selling them untested although I have only hade to remake 1 cable and that was b/c i was stupid and reversed the wires.

why would you need to use the calpots if you have a variable gain pre?

just go 248>ad1000   cheaper option than the minime.  ;D

It's my understanding that a m248 has a transparent sound.  Doensn't the 722 also?  Would that be too much of a good thing?

i don't know if this is right but i i think the reason for the cal pots is: when using an external pre w/ the mini me you want to use the line in feature. this is accomplished by turning the variable gain knobs to the off position and using the cal pot to adjust the levels. the ad 1000 is no longer supported by apogee, so you can't get parts if they break.

I believe that what Tim's getting at is that since the m248 has gain adjustment knobs, you could fine-tune gain on the m248 and leave the mme's calibration pots alone.

the m248 does not have that much gain to begin with and it does not sound as good with the gain cranked up. thats why i try to calibrate the mini me so i'll have good levels w/ the 248 gain about half way. from there i fine tune w/ the oade. thats just the way i do it.

I think we're both on the same page -- calibrate the mme's gain beforehand so that the m248 will "generally" provide a hot enough signal with its gain set @ 12 o'clock and then adjust gain at the show (fine tune) using the m248 (and leave the screwdrivers @ home)

yeah, i ran v2>mme for a while.  So i get the calibrating and knob turning fun that the mme can be
