Title: How bad does this suck...
Post by: Nick Graham on May 08, 2005, 02:57:14 PM
Last night was supposed to be my first show out with the Schoeps>Sax rig. Set everything up in the living room yesterday afternoon...worked perfectly. Hooked up everything in my bag and head out to Atlanta.

Get to the Tabernacle, throw up the stand, and no levels. I unhooked everything, went through it piece by piece...no luck. Finally got low levels by tuning the SXM2 to "High Gain" mode and turning the gain knobs wide open. Needless to say when I got home, the tape was toast - nothing but distortion.

Anyway, hook everything back up in my living room, and guess what - worked perfectly. Had decent enough levels on Low Gain with the knobs at 10 o'clock, and that was just taping my stereo.

The Taping Gods were not smiling on me last night...

Did you leave the 9vs in it?  I think that thing is always on when you have battery or external power.  Sounds like a powering issue

I think that thing is always on when you have battery or external power.

The SX-M2 has a global power switch and also a switch to turn on phantom power to the mics.  I've had more than my share of bad batches of 9v batteries - so...maybe just a bad batch.   :-\  But that wouldn't explain it working when you got back home.  Hmmmm...

Just hope it's not a mojo voodoo hex.  Anything else you can probably overcome.

I think I'm just cursed to never actually run a rig at a Crowes show. Patched in NYC and Knoxville (New York 'cause I didn't wanna fly with my rig and Knoxville because I had 3rd row), and screwed up last night.

Damn mojo voodoo hex...

d'oh, you must be that guy.
whats more amazing is that the rig worked when you got home.

Any chance the SBM was switched to "Mic" instead of "Line"?  I've done that a number of times and gotten barely audible levels wide open (just from the circuit bleedthrough).  Save for high humidity situations, that's about the only thing that I can think would cause it.

i'd be curious to know how any source turned out since the Tab isnt exactly a good room to get the best capture in my experience....

5/6/05 http://bt.etree.org/details.php?id=14164

There were at least 4 tapers (besides myself) there on 5/7, Jeromejello's ATs, AKG 483s, Neumann KM185s, and a pair of mics front row balcony...hopefully at least one source will surface soon.

i will seed the 5/7 show tomorrow night.  fwiw, the sound on sat's pull is much better then thursday's... i think they dialed it in nicely.  either that or for whatever strange reason the right side of the board had a better sound than the left.

it says on the faq page no audio recorders.  it doesn't say no microphones though!  ;D

i'll try to contact the organization to see if it'll be allowed for the taper friendly bands.
