I see the front panel of the UA-5 has a Hi-Z / Lo-Z switch
associated with the front XLR inputs.
Can I run a line in to the front panel XLRs?
(ie SoundDevices MP-2 XLR line out -> Edirol UA-5 XLR ins..)
I'm already using the mini out on the mp2 to go to my
sbm1. I have some xlr /xlr cables I could run, but I don't
have xlr / rcas to run to the line in on the back of the UA-5.
-
I believe, the HI Lo option is just for the 1/4" in, not the XLR.
-
correct. But I believe that the mic ins on the UA5 have a min gain that they provide, even all the way at "0", so you have to watch the output of the MP-2 so's you don't overload the mic pres on the UA5. If it were me , I'd get a set of XLR > RCA's and run in the line-in on the back of the UA5...

from the manual:
Depending on the device connected to input jack 2, use this switch to select either high impedence (Hi-Z) or low impedence (Lo-Z). If you are connecting a guitar or bass to input jack 2, set this switch to the high impedence setting (Hi-Z).

Good eye, I forgot that it's only chan 2 ;)

right. that's the proper answer there. I was just
hoping to avoid picking up a set of xlr / rcas last minute,
when selection is scarce, and prices high.
I'd prolly end up with an overpriced hosa pair.

Are you time crunched? I've got a set of XLR > RCA I made with StarQuad's I can let you borrow.
-
thanks for the offer. I've got about, um.....5 hours. ;D
I'm going to the Crowes with John Sousa (hhf32) and am
borrowing his AKG 393s to run into my MP2/SBM-1.
the outputs are limited though - a 7 pin male
and a 7 pin - optical. John is bringing his UA-5 in
anyway, and I've got room in my RakGear, so I
figured I'd run MP2/XLR Out->UA-5 Line In just
for the hell of it.
I'll head down to the local music store they'll have
Hosas at least...

Getting stoked for tonight!! If we go mp-2 xlr out>ua-5 rca in, this still goes through the pre of the ua-5 right? Would this be too hot of a signal, or can i just adjust the knob in back to compensate?
-
with the knob turned down, there should be "0" gain using the line-in on the back. This is the "least hot" input on the UA5... I have run line-in on the UA5 from my V2 many times, works nicely. And yes, you can adjust the knob on the back for any added gain that you need to get. I think the XLR output on the MP-2 is minimum of 16db.
