Title: SXM2 output ?
Post by: Nick Graham on May 10, 2005, 08:17:05 PM
I could easily hook my gear up and try this myself, but due to my own admitted laziness, I figured I'd ask here...

Are both outputs (mini jack/XLR) hot at the same time? I was thinking of running a comp with and without my (mod)SBM1, but would need both out puts to get it to work correctly. Anyone know?

Thanks in advance..

p.s. If it works I'll be running MK4>KCY>SXM2>(mod)SBM1>D8 (via mini jack>RCA) and MK4>KCY>SXM2>M1 (via XLR>mini plug) simultaneously

Yeah, they're both active simultaniously.  You may want to swap which output has the SBM and which has the M1 just to eliminate any sonic differences between cables and the outputs.  My SX-M2/LS seems to sound better on the XLR outputs, or maybe it's just that I only ever made problematic tapes with the 1/8" connection, so I basically ignore the 1/8" completely.  Some day I'll pop it open and add a pair of RCAs or some other small connection that's more reliable than a mini plug.

Appreciate the info. I've only got a XLR>mini plug cable, not XLR>RCA, so my decision's kinda based on that. Plus, if I do end up ditching the SBM1, I'll run XLR into the M1, for a better connection if nothing else, so I'd like to hear the XLR outs straight into the deck.

Anyway, thanks again...if there's any interest I'll post a torrent of the comp (show's Thursday night).

Ummm... I tired this once and only got one signal. Maybe I was doing something wrong though ???

I did this recently to compare the a/d of the modsbm>dat vs the r-1.

The balanced run hotter than the unbalanced:
OUTPUTS

 Balanced
 :
floating transformerless XLR, nominal level :+6dBu, max +20dBu 600 Ohms

Unbalanced
 :
 3,5mm mini-jack stereo, nominal level : 0dBu, max +14dBu

I attempted the same thing to try to compare the a/d of ModSBM1> JB3  vs. JB3 (line in).  The levels on the analog JB3 even @ +12db were not to my liking so i aborted the test and just rolled on the SBM1 > JB3.

FWIW i had the XLRs connected first and then connected the tapeout.
