Title: eBay 4061s or Oktava Omni caps?
Post by: Cooker on May 16, 2005, 01:05:29 PM
what would you do?

current rig: MK012 cards > UA-5 > JB3

i want to get some omnis for summertime. would it be a much better buy to get some of the eBay 4061s or should i just get the omni caps for the oktavas? I don't think i've heard any oktava omni tapes...  and i also don't understand if you can send p48 to those 4060s either.

If not stealthing, I'd get the Oktava omnis.

I'd personally get the 4061's... for open or stealthing.

Yeah, I think the 406x sound better - but they're more expensive and require additional components (adapters to allow running off phantom).  Depends on priorities, I suppose.

True enough... I actually think they require less gear - battery box from SP will do you fine!  But, they are more expensive than the Octava caps, I'd assume.  But, they are SOOOO worth it, IMO.

You are talking about the ebay ones, right?

You can't send them p48... what might be the best thing ot do is wire them to a miniplug, and get an sp bb for power - and run that into a pre/ad.

if they have microdot connectors you can buy microdot to xlr adapters that will allow you to use the 406x's with 48v phantom power

most of the dpa 4061's i have seen for sale on ebay are the lemo connections

what you want as pointed to above is the microdot connection, and then you will need to get the microdot>XLR connectors to use phantom

fwiw, you can buy the DPA phantom power box for around $150, then run the signal into a preamp/adc/all in one box, or simply into a dat machine or other recorder, check out the various battery boxes on sonicsense.com

The point that I'm getting at in this rambulation,..... the used mics aren't exhibiting that sort of tightness. With some folk reporting diffs between outputs of 7dB and more.

Tis my experience.

Tickets all around.

I'm not sure how different mine are - not even close to matched.

Easily remedied w/ the SBM-1 in my case though.
