Title: Total n00b wants to get started stealth w/ 300 dolllar budget
Post by: alkamist on May 23, 2005, 02:54:33 PM
First off:  is this a feasable price range for getting started stealth?

reasons why i want to do stealth above reg recording: 1. i thought it would be less expensive.  2. i kinda want to start easy/small and work my way to bigger things.  (but mostly number 1)

so basically i was just wondering what are some reccomendations for every aspect of the recording: mic, power, acd and then how do i get it on my pc at home??

any suggestions/tips/links/help would be great!

I use sound squid cardioid mics and a Sony minidisc. Probably cost me about £150 total. I'm probably as novice as they get but I’ve got great results with my equipment. So if you're interested in getting decent recordings without spending much I’d check out: http://www.giant-squid-audio-lab.com/gs/gs-policy.htm

thanks for the links!

okay, i've done a bit more searching.... but i guess what i'm trying to find out and cant seem to figure out is what precisely i need to complete a recording and get it on my pc?

not what brand or anything just a breakdown of what is needed.

you obviously need a mic, gotcha.
then you need something to power the mic,  which is called a ????  and how does it work?  like a battery attached by a cable to the mic?
then you need something to record it onto?  what mediums are used?    do i record onto a tape?  from what i understand i can record and have something (an ACD?) that will automatically convert it to a digital format right then and there?
from there i can take the whole thing home and plug it into my usb port and transfer the music to my pc in a .wav or other audio format?

am i understanding the process correctly?

thanks again for any help, and i apologize if i'm just not searching correctly.

Easiest setup would be something like:
  mic > battery box > jb3
That's what I'm running. Pretty simple. Depending what you get pretty inexpensive.

From SoundPro's you could try something like:
mic $99: http://www.soundprofessionals.com/cgi-bin/gold/item/SP-CMC-1
batt box $49: http://www.soundprofessionals.com/cgi-bin/gold/item/SP-SPSB-6
jb3: ~$150 from eBay.
--------
$300

YMMV.
