Title: Burn-in options?
Post by: ts on May 26, 2005, 05:48:31 PM
I really don't want to use my V3, how else can I do it?

do you have anything else with a phantom power supply source and gain?  a small mixer perhaps?

No. If I have to use the V3 I need an AC adapter. How about battery powered mics and a Pro 2? Or battery powered mics and my Sony PCM2600 that XLR ins?

should work fine. anything that you can connect your cables to and pass signal would do.

whay not just use external batteries ??? as long as you dont let the sla's drain fully, the should charge right back to 100% no problems unless theyre old

if you think it takes exactly 100 hrs, come on now, just burn them in a bit and get your ears used to them, i have heard many times that all burning in means that its a process of getting your ears used to the new changes, make sense ???

also, ive heard that 'burning in' only applies to silver/high quality cables because they 'loosen' up after a certain amount of time

why not 'burn them in' during shows so you can hear if there is a noticeable difference ???

Tony, if you can solder, go to Radio Shack and buy a 6V 1500mA wall wart.  Solder on a female XLR and you have a home power supply for your V3.  If you don't solder, but have an SLA with with blade connectors, you can crimp spades onto the wires to the wall wart and then move the XLR cable from the SLA to the spades hanging off the wall wart.  Use some tape to insulate the spade connectors.  If you don't want to do all that, let me know and I'll see if I can scrounge up something here.

Edit:
here's something that will work as a DC source:

That looks good Mike. I'll have to hit RS today. Just need the right size adapter. Always wanted an ac for my V3. As far as "burn in", maybe it's all hype anyway. I'm looking at getting a pair of leegedy cables. I have silvers now, but all this talk about marcs stuff has me curious. Is there a big difference between his and say my silver serpents?

Just clip off that stock connector and install a 4-pin female XLR.  Then you can use that AC adapter to power anything for which you have a standard power harness that you already use with an SLA.  If you need a female XLR, pm your address.  I have a bag of them here and I can spare one.

I've heard all the same stuff Bean mentioned about cable burn-in.  I've also read articles suggesting that cable burn-in effects are due to charge affecting the the dialectric over a period of time.   A lot of people have reported that they hear it in AB tests.  I've never heard it myself, but I have never owned a new interconnect.  All the good wire I have came out of a working system and then right into mine, so they would already be burned in.

I don't know anything about the silver serpents.  There are some really expensive and highly rated interconnects that use silver plated ofc wire in teflon.  So just on the basis of material selection, I think marcs cables should be pretty damn good.

I previously owned Audio Magic X-Streams and i can honestly say, these BLOW them outta the water IMO and these are actually 100% made, the audio magic xstreams aare the only product in the Audio Magic line that arent hand made, and the difference was QUITE noticeable

these are the SAME cable as the new Audio Magic Hyperconductors IMO, the raw cable looks identical IMO ;) but ya save about 100 bucks for a better product off of Marc
