STS9 returns to ATLANTA with TWO nights, OUTDOORS, at the Masquerade Music Park to kick off SUMMER with special guests DJ LOGIC on Friday (6/3) and THE BENEVENTO-RUSSO DUO on Saturday (6/4)!
---------------------------------
i'm attending both shows and REALLY looking forward to seeing STS9 outdoors, since i've only seem them in small indoor halls.
i've never been to the Masquerade nor its Music Park, but i've been told that it's basically a lawn area that can "hold" maybe around 1,500. there's a gradual upward slope towards the rear of the lot, but majority of the "floor" area is level.
what are your thoughts about mic config, height, placement etc. i haven't open taped much outdoors since i mostly stealth.
i do want to run multiple rigs to compare/contrast. i will probably take with me the following:
Mics:
Neumann U89
Neumann KM84
Franken-Nak cm301/302
AT853 card/hyper/subcard
i have/have access to plenty of preamps to run with these mics. so, what are some suggestions?
thanks;
marc

You might like X-Y at about 120^ if it's windy.
This config helps cut wind? Are there any other's I might try in a windy environment. Last weekend at Haymaker I got some wind noise in the left channel during PGroove, even with the BIG ASS Shure windscreens. Also, how much better are the dead rats than socks? If I use the dead rats on top of the shure windscreens, that won't muffle the sound too much?
Sorry for the thread hi jack Marc :-[
Thanks,
Joe

I think it depends on how the stacks are placed, if they aren't above 6 feet I wouldn't run to high. When I am outdoors I run DIN with cards if the wind is low. I wouldn't go above 7 feet, unless you have chatty fans down there or have to set up a long ways away then I would run hypers and about 8 feet.

if the wind is not a factor, run subcard U89s NOS...prob with a HPF on the preamp you choose on the low setting if you go FOB...which for STS9 is a must b/c of all the stereo imaging. STS9 can push the heat on the low end, so thats why for FOB it may help to use the HPF.
Whatever it is, definitely run the u89s...it will be worth it and definitely go fob

thanks you guys for the advices. i will definitely run the u89s over the weekend. between myself and one other guy, we should be running 3 different mics to see what kind of contrasting recordings we get. i really want to try out the subcard and/or omni patterns.

not sure if the omni would catch too much bass, but if run the HPF on them and the tapes would smoke. waiting for the torrent ;)

:'(
atlanta's in for some rain, lots of it.

bass role off!
They are big into the super low end.

For sure!

u89 subcards NOS->V3
I would suggest using a pretty steep rolloff too
the best tapes I made were u89 subcards outdoors

I suspect we won't hear from Marc again - last I heard from him, he'd traded the U89s for a bag of uber-heady, ailment-healing, spritually-aligning crystals and he's peddling his wares on STS9 tour.

oh damn, I didn't even see the date :P
<<<<<<<<<<<<< moron

i ran the u89 as hypers. they were spread about 2.5'. i think the taped turned out pretty good. they were throwing down some serious bass saturday night in comparison to friday night's show.
i'm hoping grider would be able to transfer these shows and get them onto etree/archive since i can't do any transfers at the moment.

i'll do it too. grider usually sends the tapes my way for transfer and uploading. holla back.
