Title: Kwon bar advice
Post by: Rob D. on June 01, 2005, 05:54:19 PM
I went to Cascade media and saw that three Neumann kwons are available: DIN, DINA and NOS. I'm going to order one and was just curious if any single one was more versitile than the others? (at 95 bones a peice, I won't be buying all three!)

Also, I see that when using this bar, a Schoeps A20 shock mount is necessary. I already have a pair of the AT8420s, would one of those work as well?

Not sure on the 8420s, will they hold a KM100 body? The Kwon bars are roughly the same diameter as a small diaphragm mic. They normal AT8410 will hold one no problem...

I'd go with DIN, as it would be useful in more situations. NOS is a really wide spread, so from any distance (unless you're using omnis or subcards) and/or with cards or hypers - it'd be a bit much. DIN or DINa would be my recommendation.

Hope that helps

Have you run your mics in any of these configurations?  If not, my advice would be to run all 3 configurations with your existing equipment and see which sounds best to you.

It does indeed help, Nick! As always, thanks for the great advice +T.

I meant to say AT8410, the standard mounts I already own so I'm just trying to avoid duplicating costs.

the 8410A will definitely hold the kwon bar - no problem.  It just won't be as stealthy as the A20s.  On the DINA bar it might crowd the caps a little.

What caps are you running?  I was under the impression that the bars work best when matched NOS/AK43s, DIN/AK40, DINA/AK50 - at least that is what I was told by someone in the section who convinced me to get a bar for my caps.  He was using DIN/AK40s.  I use the NOS bar for the AK43s and it sounds fantastic and is very easy to use.

If you buy the DIN bar and decide you prefer a different one, or don't like it for some reason, I'll take it off your hands.  I was thinking of getting one for my AK40s but I've just been lazy and I've been getting the seats where I want to use the AK43s.

Aren't the 40's the cards?  Why not get the ortf bar for the cards if indeed they are.  You can get the DINa for the 50's which I think are hypers.
I run the ortf bar with my mbho cards and the DINa bar with the hypers.  I love them.  Super lowprofile with the A20s, easy set up and breakdown.

Lil Kim, I did buy the DIN bar so I'll let you know how it works out and keep you in mind if I want to sell it down the road. So far, I've only got the AK40 and AK50 caps. What's the ballpark figure for what those AK43's cost? Did you pick 'em up new or used? +T for the info!

That's pretty much correct. The NOS bar is spaced for omnis/subcards/wide cards - and if I remember the AK43s are wide cardioid, right?

The DINa has the smallest spread of the 3, so it'd make sense to use hypers.

I've run the ORTF bar a lot but I think that there are times that I would prefer DIN.  I've quit running XY, so for me I want to try DIN further back, ortf in the middle and the sweet sweet 43s NOS up close.  My AK50s are long gone.

I got the AK43s with a mess of gear in a drunken ebay rampage so I don't know what a pair of AK43s cost.

Let me know if you decide not to keep the DIN bar, but I won't hold my breath.

+T for new toys.
