I have a Question..i have read lots of post on here about various thing all great....i'm a newbie at all this..so i was wondering if you could help me ...here goes... what is the best(your pref) set up as far as mics go for lawn...DIN,ORTF, or what?
thanks for your help...
all depends on the caps you are running. I would assume you're talking about cards. Where I would recommend ORTF, but other configs would give you pleasing results as well.
One rule of thumb that was quoted in another thread (by ducati, I believe...can't remember which thread it's in or I'd put a link herE) is to widen your pattern the further away you are from the source...from close to far, X-Y, ORTF, DIN and NOS. Of course, there's the question of how far is far, and what kind of mics/caps you're running, if you're indoor/outdoor, etc., etc.

When you said widen, are you talking about spacing or angle? I assume apcing since, ORTF is a greater angle the DIN correct?
-Kevin
ORTF is 110 degrees where din uses 90. I believe he was referrring to angle, but this bring up an intresting subject: Spaced Cards.
Have any of ya'll tried your hand at spacing cards, have you found a good distance where you get a wide stereo image without the hole in the middle?
Yes - DIN and NOS are both 90 degrees but DIN is 20cm between caps whereas NOS is 30cm. I meant cap spacing - if you go with 110 degrees way far back then there will likely be a hole in the middle...
I should put a big-ass disclaimer here that this is all based on what I've read and not actual practice...but I've read a lot. ;D
