Title: DVD Decrypter problem (slow & uses 100% CPU)
Post by: Diamond_D on June 09, 2005, 02:41:42 PM
this is a recent development, and I can't think of anything that I've changed that would cause it. DVD-Decrypter now uses 100% of the CPU both ripping and burning DVD's, and maxes out at 1.2x or 1.3x for each process. Uninstalling and reinstalling older versions does not help.

I've attached the logfile from a recent burn as it seems to be a lot longer than it used to be... anyone have any ideas what's up?

what should you be maxing out at?

try re-installing the latest drivers for your burner too

is it an external burner? if so, maybe you need the correct usb 2.0 driver installed(what happened to me), cause its stuck on 1.1

nope, internal, new-ish Dell XPS Gen 4. Worked fine for a while... used to get up to around 3x at least...

hmm, thats weird

oh, maybe try reformatting, its gonna write alot slower if it has to look for the data :)

nah this is a recurring thing, over many restarts and uninstalls. It's not a drive problem, it does the same thing whether it's off my internal or external hard drive, a Rip or a Burn. Maybe I'll try to figure out how to reinstall the drivers for the DVD drive...

make sure youre connected, then 'system' then hardware, then device manager, double click on yopur drives, and either update or un-install the current driver, that way when you restart, your comp will immediatewly recognize the missing driver, at least in XP it does

1.3x, 3x... they both indicate that you haven't updated the drive with a firmware with riplock removed.  Do that and you'll get more like 10x or better.

is your DVD burner set to the right position, Master or Slave?

can you elaborate? Not familiar with this... thanks!

Sure - basically DVD drives are made to be "smart" enough to read DVD Videos slowly to keep drive noise at a minimum.  The idea seems to be to make sure that your drive doesn't get too noisy while trying to watch a movie and become a distraction.  That's great if you use your drive that way, but if you don't... and you just want to rip FAST, then you can grab a modified firmware that removes this restriction.  Your rip times will go up *considerably* - usually from around 2x max to 12x or even 16x depending on the drive speed.

Try http://tdb.rpc1.org/ among other sites.

If you do a lot of DVD Video ripping, and also watch DVD movies on your PC, then you might consider adding a second DVD drive to the system, and use one for watching and one for ripping.  If you add a second ND-3450A, you can burn two copies of CDs and DVDs at once in Nero which may be helpful at times.

update:

reinstalling drivers didn't work. I also tried using the prgoram to burn an ISO to CD with my CD-RW drive, and it worked totally fine, so it's just this drive. Any other ideas?

in case anyone is interested... it turns out Windows had disabled DMA Mode on my DVD Drive, so it was in PIO mode (slow and processor consuming). It was a bitch to fix but finally playing with the BIOS got it back to normal!
