Title: 48k > 44.1k conversions
Post by: Javit on June 10, 2005, 03:34:26 PM
Anyone out there know a decent freeware program that goese 48 > 44.1k conversions?  I'd really like a copy of Soundforge but I don't have the $$ to buy a copy.  Thanks  :)

I started out using Audacity and was very unhappy with the results of the sample rate conversion and dithering.  Never tried sox.  It was recommended to me by Doug Oade to try Wavelab Essential as a good inexpensive program for basic editing.  He recommended it because of its quality sample rate conversion and dithering.  I have used it ever since and have been completely satisfied.  I payed $99 for my copy from musicians friend, but I think it is out of production now so you may find it even cheaper on e-bay.  Money well spent, and the multitrack software I have now automatically referenced the wavelab plugins so I get double use out of it.

Lately I've just been keeping my masters @ 48 for some reason, if people want to convert them to 44.1 that's fine, it's just easier for me.

if you split a 48khz show and then people convert them to 44.1khz, i've heard the sectors will be messed up and you'll get skips and pauses between tracks.  so people will have to join the 48khz wavs before they downsample and then resplit them.

you could do a batch resample and then run the 44.1's through shntool

good point...still, for the average downloader, they don't know how to do that.  but thats their own fault for not getting educated if you ask me.
