Title: Damn Hurricane Arlene > Homemade windscreen question...
Post by: KLowe on June 11, 2005, 08:22:01 PM
Hey good folks of taperland.

Quick question for yall.  I plan on taping mofro tomorrow in Chattanooga.  Since Arlene decided to screw everything up....I will have to make some homemade windscreens.  All I have is standard packing  foam (think mattress "eggcrate" stylee).  Anyways...do any of yall have any experience with making your own out of this type of foam?

minimum/maximum thickness?

Does shape of screen matter?  or can I toss up a "square" w/ a mic stuck in it?

Thanks in advance for the help.

I'll post pics of the ones I already made.

Personally I'd try using socks (multiple layers if needed) before using egg-crate foam.  I would think eggcrate foam is too dense for our purposes, but I might be way off base on that since you're dealing w/ winds from a hurricane.  I do think the shape matters in so far as if you put a square piece of foam on a 391 you'd end up attenuating sounds coming in at the 'corners' of the square more than the middle of the sides, if that makes any sense, although I don't really know how much it'll affect the sound.  Also I would think that corners could actually end up causing wind noise rather than minimizing it if the wind were strong enough.  OK, end of babbling.  -Drew

Head to rat shack pick up a pair of screens then use a pair of socks (Preferably new ones)turned inside out , with the fuzys on the outside.  Double sock it if you have too......this will help out alot....and tape as close to the monitor as possible.  don't worry about being in the sweet spot....most Pa's are mono anyway....atleast if your close, the music will over power any leakage wind noise you may pick up in between songs..........also tape a umbrella to your stand...real low to the mics......stake the stand if you have too(recomended) but hold on to your stand it can take off with a strong wind.......I have seen some mics fly further than friggin mary popins!LOL

here is the source

Addidas gym socks > 391'1 > wmod-UA5 > Jb3

Thanks for the advice.  The wind had pretty much died down to a nice breeze w/ not a clowd in the sky.  Thanks for the advice.  The socks worked great.
